A Clue Saga

INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - HALL - NIGHT
The relentless storm continues to roll over Blackwell Grange from the west. The low, booming bellow of thunder rattles the stained glass windows above the front doors.
DR. HUGH BLACK descends the left of the two sweeping staircases. He is holding his pocket-square over his bleeding nose.
He is winded from his altercation in the Attic.
As soon as he reaches the bottom of the stairs, DR. WALTER RAVEN emerges from the LOUNGE doorway holding a glass and a half-empty bottle of gin. He is jovial, drunk, and walks with staggering confidence.
DR. BLACK is annoyed by the sight of the short, fat, old, round man.
2.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
(slurring)
"I was hoping to run into you..."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"Not now, Dr. Raven. You already wore me down in the library."
DR. WALTER RAVEN
(pessimistically)
"Yes, but with the contempt you hold towards me and my daughter..."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"You'll get your money by the garden party. My lawyer will be in contact."
DR. BLACK tries to move past DR. RAVEN towards the DINING ROOM, but the large man blocks his way.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
(oddly confident; drunk)
"Now, listen here! I've been very patient with you. You owe me a great deal in back pay and I have been nothing but lenient. If I am not paid off in full by the time the string quartet starts in the gazebo, there will be hell to pay."
DR. HUGH BLACK
(laughing)
"What can you possibly do? You are a sycophant. You have no one in your back pocket on retainer."
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"Do not forget the type of man I once was, Dr. Black. Those parties in Monte Carlo? I could drive a saber through innocent flesh as easily as you."
DR. BLACK grabs DR. RAVEN by the collar of his shirt and pushes his back against the DINING ROOM door frame.
DR. RAVEN releases the bottle and glass. Both shatter upon impact with the HALL's floor. Gin and shards of glass scatter around their feet.
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I am dealing with so many other things right now.

3.
DR. HUGH BLACK (CONT'D)
The last thing on my mind is paying a man who is already rich and fat. Have you forgotten what I can orchestrate? There are people who will blindly follow me off a cliff? There are people who routinely put aside their voices of better judgement and do whatever I say -- including yourself, Dr. Raven. Think about that before acting so comfortably in my mansion."
DR. BLACK releases DR. RAVEN as the DINING ROOM's french windows open.
MR. REGINALD ASH, SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY, and MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE walk through the DINING ROOM, dripping wet. They approach DR. BLACK and DR. RAVEN in the HALL's doorway.
DR. RAVEN is furious, embarrassed, and a tiny bit frightened.
DR. BLACK looks up at them eagerly, already moving past his balky encounter with DR. RAVEN - chalking it up as one of many today.
MR. ASH, SGT. GRAY, and M. BRUNETTE reach DR. BLACK with puzzled faces.
DR. HUGH BLACK
"Well? Have you rung someone to take Frau Bloom from the swimming pool?"
MR. ASH raises his eyebrows.
MR. REGINALD ASH
(bewildered)
"Sir..."
SGT. GRAY scratches his damp hair, perplexed and confused.
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"Is Mrs. White certain about what she thought she saw?"
4.
DR. BLACK cocks his head and raises and eyebrow.
MR. REGINALD ASH
Frau Bloom wasn't there, sir."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
(considering)
"Is it possible that she slipped and fell into the swimming pool? It could have felt like an eternity for Mrs. White, but in reality it was only a few seconds before Frau Bloom got back up."
MonSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Mrs. White is getting up in her years. Has she been a bit forgetful from time to time?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"She seems to have a strong grasp on things. Her emotions and nosiness can get the best of her, but her mind has always been sharp and quick."
MonSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Someone should go talk to her."
SerGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
(shrugging)
"I... I honestly don't know what to do from here. There's no body."
DR. RAVEN's eyes widen.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"You said body? You aren't talking about John Boddy?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Afraid not, sir."
DR. BLACK leads the men deeper into the DINING ROOM away from DR. RAVEN.
DR. RAVEN frowns and sulks off in the HALL towards the staircase.
DR. HUGH BLACK
(quietly)
"We don't know what is going on right now.

5.
DR. HUGH BLACK (CONT'D)
Mrs. White said Frau Bloom slipped and was unconscious, possibly dead. But she's not there, so she obviously got help."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"I suppose..."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"We should go look for her. She's probably in the servant's quarters or showering off in the pool house."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I'll talk to Mrs. White. In the meantime, go to the servant's quarters and look for Frau Bloom."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - BODDY's suite - meanwhile
MASTER JOHN BODDY reclines back on his bed, while DR. ANDREA ORCHID sits at the foot of his bed, rubbing his calves.
On the nightstand, there is a plate of fruits, cheeses, dried sausages, and crackers beside a half-empty bottle of cognac.
MASTER BODDY sighs, closing his eyes and sinking deeper into the pillows. DR. ORCHID watches from the corner of her eye as his eyelids flutter shut.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
(soothingly)
"Everything is going to be okay. You were worried about your uncle's initial reaction. I told you to keep a firm stance. I kept my own firm stance. He saw that he was outmatched."
MASTER BODDY reaches for a red grape from the plate.
6.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"And what about the Doves?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I doubt they'll make it to the wedding. The way his anger boils - no one good would ever love him."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I'm still not guaranteed an inheritance even if they do split up. What if Uncle Hugh tries again and again until he finds the bride of his dreams."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Then we have to stop that from happening. Is that going to be an issue with you?"
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I don't like work."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"No one does, that's why it's called work."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(lazily)
"Can't you take care of it for me? Whatever sneaky little telephone calls or blackmail letters..."
(groaning)
"Just do them for me. I trust your discretion."
DR. ORCHID releases the seventeen-year-old's calf and stands up.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Get up."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(groaning)
"Why?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I want you to show me Hugh's private Study."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(groaning)
"Right now?"
7.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Yes, now. The mansion is dark. The guests are settling into their rooms. The noise of the thunderstorm will cover my snooping."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"What are you even snooping for?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
(smirking)
"You'll see."
MASTER BODDY stands up from the bed with a huff. He tears off a cluster of grapes and follows his fiancee to the door.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"This better be good."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET stands in the dark KITCHEN at the sink with the tap running. She is gulping down a glass of water quickly. She catches her breath and wipes her mouth.
A noise from the other side of the room startles her.
MISS SCARLET swings around quickly.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Is someone there?"
MISS SCARLET glances at the back door, the walk-in freezer, and the pantry. The shadows are still. She shrugs and nervously hurries to the HALL door. She hears the hanging copper pots and pans rattle above the wooden table as she leaves the room.
8.
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - HALL - CONTINUOUS
MISS SCARLET closes the KITCHEN door behind her in fright and walks alongside the gallery paintings with one hand on the wall.
As she turns to climb the sweeping staircase, when she hears screaming -
FIVEL rushes to the top of the stairs. His face is flushed and tears are in his eyes.
FIVEL
"Help! Come quick!"
MISS SCARLET rushes up the staircase to see the frightened boy at the top of the landing.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Are you alright? What's wrong?"
FIVEL
(quickly; crying)
"It's my mother. She fell. She was grabbing her belly. She asked for Nurse Silver."
MR. ASH comes from the DINING ROOM, hears the commotion, and climbs the staircase.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Is Fivel alright?"
9.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"It's his mother. Something happened."
FIVEL
(through tears)
"In the nursery."
MR. ASH quickly rushes around the corner of the UPSTAIRS HALL
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - UPSTAIRS HALL - COnTINUOUS
MR. ASH hurries towards the open NURSERY door. Thunder rattles, echoing in the hallway.
MISS SCARLET and FIVEL follow a few steps behind him. MISS SCARLET has her arm around FIVEL, who is shaking like a leaf.
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - NURSERY - CONTINUOUS
MR. ASH enters the room to find it empty. He is puzzled and confused.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"She was in here?"
FIVEL looks around, shocked.
FIVEL
(despondently)
"She... she was right here.
FIVEL points to the floor by the door.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Maybe she got up and got some help."
FIVEL begins to panic and pace back and forth.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Miss Scarlet, take Fivel to your bedroom and lock the door. Something is going on and it isn't being handled as urgently as it needs to be."
MISS SCARLET nods quickly and takes FIVEL by the hand.
10.
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - MASTER BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
DR. BLACK quickly throws several handfuls of clothing into a black, alligator skin suitcase. He grabs a metal key ring and tosses it inside. He closes the suitcase and takes it to the double doors.
DR. BLACK closes his eyes and drops the suitcase. He turns around and faces his bedroom. Lightning flashes, followed by thunder.
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I can't..."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - LIBRARY - MOMENTS LATER
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE pulls open the door. Light from the hall illuminates MADAME ROSE BLACK sitting in the dark.
MRS. WHITE flicks on the light switch. MME ROSE squints her eyes, adjusting them to the harsh yellow glow of the lamps.
MRS. WHITE picks up the candlestick on the desk as she passes by, heading towards MME ROSE.
MME ROSE sits forward on the divan where she meditates.
11.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(rolling her eyes)
"I can't find any peace in this house."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I've been looking everywhere for you. Your brother, Ben..."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(calmly)
"He's escaped. Yes, I know."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(surprised)
"You know?
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I saw it."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(annoyed)
"You saw it?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"It was prophesied many years ago."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I won't indulge in this. I'm telling Dr. Black that you had something to do with this."
MRS. WHITE turns to leave the room.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"He didn't kill Frau Bloom. Don't you dare let the police put this on him!"
MRS. WHITE stops dead in her tracks.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"What are you doing back here after all these years?"
12.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I told you. I came here to die."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Of old age, or tonight?"
MME ROSE begins to cackle.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I won't be dying tonight, Mrs. White. But we are less than a year from our deaths."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I'm not afraid of dying."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"But you are afraid of what comes after?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I've done things, Rose. Things I'll never be forgiven for."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"Spend time with your son, Mrs. White. Tell him the truth before you lose him too."
MRS. WHITE pauses before walking closer to the eccentric woman.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Get up. We need to find Dr. Black and Mr. Ash."
MME ROSE sighs in frustration and stands up.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I can't find peace in my own bedroom, on the terrace, or in the damned library."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - BILLIARD ROOM - CONTINUOUS
MR. THALLO GREEN is leaning forward, passed out on the bar. His right hand is tightly holding onto a sticky shot glass. MISS OLIVIA RAVEN enters the room with a loud slam of the door.
13.
MR. GREEN sits up with a groggy glance. As soon as he sees MISS RAVEN, he groans and lays his head back down on the bar.
MR. THALLO GREEn
(mumbling)
"What do you want?"
MISS OLIVIA RAVEN
"I was wondering what you thought about that Orchid woman."
MR. THALLO GREEN
"I'd fuck her."
MISS OLIVIA RAVEN
(disgusted)
"That is not what I meant."
MR. GREEN sits up annoyed.
MR. THALLO GREEN
"What do you want me to say? Do you want me to validate what everyone is already thinking? She's a gold digging pedophile."
MISS RAVEN picks up the nearly empty bottle beside MR. GREEN.
MISS OLIVIA RAVEN
(sniffing)
"I don't know how you drink this stuff. It tastes disgusting."
MR. THALLO GREEN
"I don't drink it because I'm thirsty. I drink it to make annoying voices like yours become goofy and tolerable."
MISS OLIVIA RAVEN
"I have this annoying problem that no one wants to help me with. It's like an itch that can't be scratched."
14.
MR. THALLO GREEN
"I'm only good at scratching specific types of itches."
MISS OLIVIA RAVEN
"I want to be part of this world again. I want the life I almost had."
MR. GREEN snatches the bottle from her and finishes it off.
MR. THALLO GREEN
"Why the hell would you want that?"
MISS OLIVIA RAVEN
"It was dinner tonight. It reminded me how much I miss being home at Blackwell Grange."
MR. THALLO GREEN
"This place ain't your home, sweetheart."
MISS OLIVIA RAVEN
"It could be. Anything is negotiable. Hugh Black owes my father a lot of money that he can't seem to pay. I've heard a little rumor that Blackwell's Estate is nearly dry."
MR. THALLO GREEN
"Yeah, I've heard that same rumor. It comes from paranoid men. I get paid weekly. Big bucks. If he isn't paying your father, it is because he's decided he doesn't have to and your father can't do anything about it. He's going to tell him when a specific payday will occur and then that day will pass. This will go on and on until your father gives up."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - RED GUEST ROOM - contINUOUS
MISS SCARLET and FIVEL quickly rush into the room, closing the door quickly behind them. MR. CLAY is no where to be found.
15.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(calling out)
"Edward?"
MISS SCARLET checks the attached bathroom. It is empty.
FIVEL
"Where did he go?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I don't know."
MISS SCARLET walks over to the UPSTAIRS HALL door. FIVEL wrings his fingers nervously.
FIVEL
"Where are you going?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"To find Edward."
FIVEL
"Mr. Ash said you have to stay in here with me."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Look, kid..."
(sighing)
"I don't know what's going on. But if something weird is happening, I need Edward here with me."
FIVEL
"You can't just leave me in here alone."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Sure I can. Just lock the door behind me. I'll knock four times really fast like this so you knows it me."
MISS SCARLET knocks four rhythmic beats. FIVEL nods slowly.
16.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"You'll be fine."
FIVEL
"Please, just hurry."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - MASTER BEDROOM - conTINUOUS
DR. BLACK is kneeling at the foot of his bed, praying.
DR. HUGH BLACK
(sobbing)
"It's over for me. I have to run away. There is nothing left for me... no one... nothing..."
The door behind him slowly creaks open.
DR. BLACK opens his eyes, staring ahead at the pillows on his bed. He sighs deeply.
He feels a figure slowly approaching him from behind.
A slender, delicate hand rests on his shoulder.
DR. BLACK looks up with a jolt.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK looks down at him with sadness in her eyes.
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I was wondering if you would come and talk to me."
17.
MRS. PEACOCK opens her mouth to speak but cannot find the words. DR. BLACK smiles through his tears. He shakes his head with a long sigh.
DR. HUGH BLACK
"Why did you come back here? Why now?"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I have nothing else left to lose except the remaining shreds of my dignity."
DR. BLACK stands up, wiping the tears from his face.
DR. HUGH BLACK
(composing himself)
"I'm sorry."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"We've both seen each other cry."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I meant for everything you have been through..."
MRS. PEACOCK stares into his eyes, overwhelmed with so many feelings.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I never wanted to see you again."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"And now?"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I thought I would tell you everything you put me through... make you understand my pain..."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I do."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I thought that maybe you'd regret everything... especially the way we left things."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I do."
18.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(starting to cry)
"I thought that we'd fall in love again."
DR. BLACK leans forward, pulling her close to him.
MRS. PEACOCK gasps. She tries to resist him, but the feeling of his warm, comforting hands after decades apart has a way of filling her with peace. She relaxes in his grasp.
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I love you, Patricia."
MRS. PEACOCK's relaxation is shortly lived. Her shoulders tense up and she begins to breathe in and out quickly.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I... I..."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"Let me love you again. Run away with me. Let's leave everything behind."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(unhappily)
"I don't want this anymore..."
MRS. PEACOCK pushes herself out of DR. BLACK's arms. She brushes off the area where he touched her.
MRS. PEACOCK looks down at the floor, her eyes becoming blurry with tears.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(sobbing)
"I thought I wanted this but I don't. I don't know what I wanted. I just wanted you to feel the pain I felt... But that's stupid.."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I do, Patricia. I do feel the pain."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(screaming)
"Well it's not good enough!"
DR. BLACK is silent, unable to turn himself away from MRS. PEACOCK and the out-pour of heavy, breathless sobs that come from her.
19.
DR. HUGH BLACK
"I love you so much it aches. I always loved you. My father forced us apart."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"We could have run away together."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"That is what I am asking right now."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Why? Why now after all these years? Why couldn't we have run away together when we were young and full of so many dreams. Why after all this time are you ready to cast aside your empire?"
DR. HUGH BLACK
"Because it is all worthless to me."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I can't love you. I don't know what love is anymore. I don't know who I am anymore. I don't know what I want anymore."
DR. HUGH BLACK
"Patricia, I love you."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"No you don't. You just ran out of options again."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - SERvant's quarters - contINUOUS
SGT. GRAY shakes his head, looking out at the SWIMMING POOL from the open doorway of the SERVANT'S QUARTERS.
20.
M. BRUNETTE comes down the stairs from the bedroom loft. He shakes his head with a grim frown.
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"She wasn't up there, was she?"
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"None of the beds have been touched."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"We have to keep an eye out for this Ben Black fellow. He could be armed and dangerous for all we know."
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Why on earth would he move the body?"
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"There is no telling with a homicidal maniac."
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
(hesitantly)
"Do you believe insanity can be cured, Sergeant?"
Thunder rumbles loudly and closely, causing the power to flicker.
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"If you are born crazy, you die crazy."
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Professor Plum might disagree with you."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"Professor Plum is a disagreeable man."
21.
SGT. GRAY pushes open a small closet curiously. There is a series of old mops and brooms stacked up with old buckets and a broken vacuum-cleaner.
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"You don't suppose..."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"What?"
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Well, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense..."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"Tell me."
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Is it possible that Mrs. White is suffering from delusions of grandeur?"
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"Such people with such cases have walked these halls. Nothing is impossible. But speculation isn't going to help us locate Frau Bloom."
SGT. GRAY motions for the door.
M. BRUNETTE pulls his coat collar up to cover his neck as he follows SGT. GRAY back out into the rain.
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - HALL - CONTINUOUS
DR. ORCHID stands at the STUDY door fiddling with the lock. MASTER BODDY stands behind her keeping watch -- impatiently.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(whining)
"I don't see why this couldn't wait."
22.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
(whispering)
"Just keep an eye out for anyone."
MASTER BODDY keeps his eyes focused on the large, empty void of darkness which is the nighttime HALL. It is fully illuminated for only a moment as lightning flashes outside.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
(triumphantly)
"There! Got it!"
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(eating grapes)
"Let's be quick about this. I'm getting tired."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - STUDY - cONTINUOUS
DR. ORCHID opens the STUDY door and carefully steps inside.
MASTER BODDY follows behind her, closing the door and walking around far too casually. He chomps on his grapes as he looks at some of the new knick-knacks and collectibles on display.
DR. ORCHID tries to ignore his juvenile wandering, but finds her brow twitching and tensing as MASTER BODDY spins the globe.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
(irritated)
"Stand over by the door. I need to check to see if the information I was given was right."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(puzzled)
"Information about what?"
DR. ORCHID begins to work on a locked drawer on the large mahogany desk.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"There is reason to believe that your birthright is still within our grasp."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(shrugging)
"Do what you want, but I'm telling you -- Uncle Hugh wrote me out of the will.
23.
MASTER JOHN BODDY (CONT'D)
He made a big point in letting me know he was serious about that."
The loud click of the drawer becoming unlocked sends a slight sense of hope into MASTER BODDY's chest.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"... unless, of course, you have reason to believe he changed his mind?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"It's something I overheard."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"So this is all based on eaves dropping?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"When I went to fact-check the information I had, Hugh Black's lawyer evaded every loaded question."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"You've met Mr. Meadow-Brook?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Yes. If his cigar-smoke-filled office wasn't bad enough, his wife came by with the gossip of the day. Something about the vicar's wife and a new litter of kittens."
DR. ORCHID begins to dig through the drawer past folders, large envelopes, and stacks of papers held together by various colored clips.
DR. ORCHID pulls out a leather-bound document and opens it.
DR. ORCHID's eyes scan over the document quickly, yet thoroughly.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"John..."
DR. ORCHID's voice is not hopeful, happy, or calm.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"What is it?"
MASTER BODDY quickly rushes over to the desk beside her.
24.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
(in disbelief)
"... this can't be it? There has to be a newer will."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(impatiently)
"Andrea, what's wrong?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"This will... it was made long before you were born. It was revoked and then replaced, then reinstated. It's signed here by Hugh Black and Miles Meadow-Brook. The reinstatement is dated two months ago."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(hesitantly)
"Who does the will benefit?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
(reading quickly)
"The estate is split up. I haven't read it all..."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"Among who? Is it staying in the family? What part can I be entitled to?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"It says there is a stipulation, in which the terms have been recorded and placed in the care of a good friend."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"What on earth does that mean?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"John, there are a lot of names on here. The money is fairly divided... and most of the names are people that are currently here at the mansion."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I need to talk to Uncle Hugh."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"No, don't! He can't know that you know the details of his will."
25.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(paranoid)
"If we broke into his desk and read it, then anyone else could have done the same before us or still might after us."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"So be it. We aren't here to protect your uncle. We are here to secure our future."
MASTER BODDY closes his eyes and shakes his head in disagreement.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"When my parents disappeared, Uncle Hugh took care of me. But it didn't start off that way."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"What do you mean?"
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I was sent to live with Aunt Rose first. But that was more work for me than it was for her... the way she lives, her routines, rituals, meditations, superstitions. I couldn't live by every ridiculous rule."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"So it wasn't Dr. Black's obligation to take you in."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"And he still did. And he tried to find my parents -- however futile Colonel Mustard's efforts were."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Don't go there... not again."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I can't help but feel anger and hatred towards them..."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"It's understandable."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"And still..."
26.
MASTER BODDY's voice trails off.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"John? Are you alright?"
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"Everyone is going to find out the type of man Hugh Black is. Why bother stopping the inevitable."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER
MRS. WHITE and MME ROSE knock on the door to the MASTER BEDROOM.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Dr. Black! It's Mrs. White, I found your sister."
There is no response.
MRS. WHITE tightly clutches onto the candlestick she brought from the library.
MME ROSE grabs the doorknob and tries to enter. It is locked.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"What now?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Someone must be inside. It doesn't lock from outside. There is no keyhole."
27.
MRS. WHITE indicates the brass doorknob.
MME ROSE pounds on the door.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(shouting, worried)
"Hugh!"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(softly, concerned)
"Dr. Black? Miss Dove?"
MR. ASH approaches from the east wing of the UPSTAIRS HALLWAY.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"What the devil are you two shouting for?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"We can't find Dr. Black."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Have you seen Nurse Silver?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Is it Frau Bloom? Is she still breathing?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
(pausing)
"Frau Bloom wasn't there... are you sure that she was dead?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"She was floating face first in the water."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"For how long?"
MRS. WHITE starts at him with fire in her eyes.
28.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Do you really think I've forgotten the difference between a dead body and a living one?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"Why are you looking for Nurse Silver if Frau Bloom isn't injured?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Where is Frau Bloom?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"We can't find her. Sergeant Gray and Monsieur Brunette are looking for her in the servant's quarters. Nurse Silver... she may be with Miss Dove."
MR. ASH pauses as thunder illuminates the UPSTAIRS HALLWAY.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"According to Fivel, Miss Dove took ill and passed out on the nursery floor. When we got there, she was gone."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Gone? Like Frau Bloom? Don't you see what this means?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"I don't think it's anything like that."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(fiddling with the door)
"Reggie, how do we unlock the master bedroom? Something isn't right."
MR. REGINALD ASH
