A Clue Saga

FLASHBACK - MONTE CARLO - THE MASKED BALL
Int. Studio - night
LORRAINE ARDOISE looks around the art studio with curiosity. All of the paintings are of morbid, disfigured bodies. Some human, others unearthly. LORRAINE sniffs in disgust at the metallic odor in the air.
Ignoring it, she continues to drink her wine. It is strong. She chokes a bit as she swallows the sweet red liquid. She loses her footing for a second and backs into a table, causing a blue vase to wobble about.
It is then that LORRAINE notices she is not alone in the room.
A man in a masquerade mask is standing in the doorway holding a meat cleaver. It glistens in the light as he quietly proceeds into the room.
LORRAINE ARDOISE
"A visitor? At a masked ball? I didn't bring a mask. No body told me."
LORRAINE looks down at her low-cut blue dress, embarrassed. Even through the mask, she can tell the man is staring lustfully at her chest.
LORRAINE ARDOISE
"I suppose, I should be heading back out to the party, shouldn't I?"
MASKED MAN
(gruffly)
"You'd be a lot safer and a lot warmed in here with me."
LORRAINE ARDOISE
(shrieking with laughter)
"You're joking, right?"
The man holds up the cleaver threateningly.
MASKED MAN
"You can't really say no, can you?"
2.
LORRAINE kicks him hard in his shin and rushes away towards the door.
The MASKED MAN slashes at her wrist with the cleaver. It strikes true, cutting to the bone.
LORRAINE screams, grabbing her wrist as blood seeps between her fingers. It takes her half a second to realize the horrible danger she is in.
LORRAINE sprints out of the studio into the grand hall. Blood droplets splash on the floor behind her.
INT. GRAND HALL - CONTINUOUS
LORRAINE enters the grand hall to see find dozens of eyes staring silently back at her from underneath their masks. Everyone is dressed richly and elaborately.
LORRAINE becomes dizzy and disorientated as they all close in on her at once.
LORRAINE ARDOISE
(pushing people back)
"No!"
LORRAINE punches and kicks and screams as the people grab for her arms.
LORRAINE screams as fingernails claw and grab into the bleeding wound on her wrist - stretching it open wider like vultures to a carcass.
Her hair is pulled.
Her neck is forced downward.
Her arms are twisted in pain as they are spread out and apart.
Her knees buckle.
LORRAINE ARDOISE
(in pain)
"Stop! Please!"
LORRAISE looks up to see a man in a black cloak, with red lining inside. He is wearing a top hat and is holding a crossbow.
3.
LORRAINE ARDOISE
"P-Please! I have a child."
TOP HAT MAN
"Oh, we know about Yvette."
The TOP HAT MAN loads two bolts into the crossbow at once and nods to the four masked people holding her arms.
Two on each arm - they stretch LORRAINE's arms even tighter.
LORRAINE screams in anguish, feeling her shoulders shake on the brink of being dislocated.
The TOP HAT MAN pulls the trigger, releasing the two bolts.
They each land in her chest, above each breast.
The masked people release her and LORRAINE falls to her knees.
She struggles to keep herself from falling over with her limp, strained arms and bleeding wrist
The blood from her lacerated wrist mixes on the marble floor with the blood dripping off the ends of the crossbow bolts.
TOP HAT MAN
"Your death will not be in vain. Everything on this fucking earth has a purpose."
The TOP HAT MAN leaves LORRAINE, bleeding out and struggling to keep herself from falling over.
The guests all hold hands and begin to spin and dance around her. Baroque music begins to play on a gramophone.
LORRAINE slips in her own blood and falls. The crossbow bolts strike the marble floor of the grand hall and impale her chest deeper.
LORRAINE screams and pants, exhausted and in pain. She is desperately trying to push her weight off of the stabbing bolts. She uses her elbows to steady herself and keep her head up.
The TOP HAT MAN reloads the crossbow with another bolt.
LORRAINE feels her legs and feet go numb as she loses control of her bladder.
4.
The TOP HAT MAN clucks in disgust as he presses the front of the crossbow against her forehead.
LORRAINE ARDOISE
(breathlessly)
"You'll... burn... for this."
The TOP HAT MAN releases LORRAINE ARDOISE from her suffering and her fears.
LORRAINE falls forward, sending the fresh bolt deeper through her skull. Her neck falls crudely and limply to the side.
TOP HAT MAN
"String her up and line up for target practice. Each eye socket is worth twenty points. The heart is fifty."
BACK TO PRESENT
EXT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - WOODS - MORNING
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY follows DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO deeper into the woods behind Blackwell Grange. There is urgency in INSP. PRY’s stride. OFFICER FROST and OFFICER MOSS straggle behind.
INSP. PRY sniffs the air as they approach a forest clearing. He looks up at the tree tops ahead of him to see several are mildly scorched on the edge of a small clearing.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"What the fuck?"
In the center of the forest clearing, a charred patch of grass and a metal gasoline can rest beside -
The charred, burned remains of MISS BRENDA DOVE.
INSP. PRY walks close to the charred skeleton. He looks down at her engagement ring and the chain from her necklace.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"This doesn’t make any sense."
DeTECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"What do you mean?"
5.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"It rained all night."
INSP. PRY bends over and feels the damp grass.
InSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"The killer must have done this after we arrived... right under our noses..."
OFFICER FROST raises an eyebrow.
OFFICER THEODORE FROST
"Leon and I were all over this place last night. We would have seen this fire from the house."
INSP. PRY looks back in the direction of Blackwell Grange. The rooftop and chimneys are barely visible over the forest’s uneven terrain.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"This clearing is pretty well-hidden."
OFFICER LEON MOSS
(mumbling)
"With enough gasoline that body could have burned during the peak of that thunderstorm last night."
OffICER THEODORE FROST
"It was raining sideways! There’s no way."
OFFICER LEON MOSS
"We don’t know how full that canister was or how many times they had to relight her body. Point is, it isn’t impossible if you’re determined and have enough gas. Hell, me and my dad went camping when I was eight..."
InSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"I do not wish to hear the rest of this story, Officer Moss."
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"You can look at this any way you want to. Regardless, we have all of our dead bodies."
6.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"I’m going to check the attic and see if I can see this clearing from up there."
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"Why? Is that necessary?"
INSP. PRY doesn't answer. He rushes off towards Blackwell Grange with determination.
OFFICER FROST and OFFICER MOSS shrug to each other and follow. DET. AMARILLO stops them.
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
(hesitating)
"Hey, uh, wait up, you two. Let Pry do his thing for a bit."
OFFICER MOSS scratches the back of his head as he watches INSP. PRY disappear into a thick cluster of trees.
OFFICER THEOdoRE FROST
"Is he gonna be okay?"
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"I've no frickin' clue. All I know is we need to go talk to Commissioner Forest personally about everything that just happened here."
OFFICER LEON MOSS
"Including Pry?"
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
(thinking)
"Ehh... I don't really think so. I don't know. I'll run it by him. If he says no, I'm not arguing with the man. I'm not having that kind of day today."
OFFICER THEODORE FROST
(raising an eyebrow)
"What kind of day are you expecting to have? We still have to get that body pulled from the lake and now we got this one barbequed to a crisp."
7.
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"Just be glad we are here and not in Sun Haven with the psychopath that killed a bunch of people and moved their bodies around. Seriously who does that? A cellar? A lake? A forest? A frickin' tennis net?"
OFFICER THEODORE FROST
"That poor boy..."
OFFICER LEON MOSS
"We still gotta find that boy's eyes."
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
(disgusted)
"What?"
OFFICER LEON MOSS
"Edward Clay. His eyes were removed and his throat was slit. We never found his eyes."
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
(sarcastically)
"Great."
OFFICER THEODORE FROST
"I don't get it. Who would make art out of murder?"
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - LOBBY
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE enters the lobby behind MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET and GREYSON.
MISS SCARLET thanks GREYSON for helping with her luggage. He nods appreciatively in her direction as he walks off towards the hotel lobby's front desk.
M. BRUNETTE lights a cigarette and approaches MISS SCARLET, tossing the match into a pedestal ashtray beside a lobby sofa.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(pleading)
"Do you mind if I bum a cigarette? I ran out after the night we had."
8.
M. BRUNETTE opens his cigarette box and offers her one. He strikes a match and holds it out for her. She has to lean in awkwardly to light the cigarette off of the flame.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Thank you."
MISS SCARLET smiles and she takes the smoke into her lungs. She exhales slowly.
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Has your stepmother gotten the key for your room yet?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"There seems to be some sort of delay. I'm not sure..."
MISS SCARLET and M. BRUNETTE look over to the front desk where MRS. PEACOCK, COLONEL MUSTARD, SIR BENEDICT, and MR. GREEN argue with the desk clerk - a plain-looking, mousy, girl with dark brown hair.
M. BRUNETTE waves politely to MISS SCARLET as he parts ways, heading over to better understand the commotion at the front desk.
M. BRUNETTE places himself directly between MRS. PEACOCK and COL. MUSTARD. He ignores MRS. PEACOCK's huffing and puffing as she moves to stand on the other side of COL. MUSTARD to be away from him.
M. BRUNETTE eyes the young desk clerk with a smirk. He leans in to read her nametag 'HOLLY'.
HOLLY
"I'm sorry. I wasn't told there would be this many new guests this morning. Miss Snow hasn't come in to work yet. "
SIR BENEDICT slams his cane down on the front desk.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"I spoke with Miss Snow personally and we discussed the sizable sum I would give her in exchange for our stay.
9.
HOLLY
"Miss Snow should be here any minute. I'm not sure what else to tell you."
MR. THALLO GREEN
"Should be here? What time does her shift start?"
HOLLY
"Miss Snow doesn't really follow a schedule."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Are there even enough rooms here for all of us? Is someone in charge of that schedule?"
HOLLY
"I'm sorry. I wish I could help more."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
(very angry)
"I'll hear no more of this. Give me a goddamn key."
HOLLY
"I-I have to wait until Miss Snow gets here."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"I've been in a fucking car for hours! I've been standing around for two hours prior to that waiting for your amateur chauffeurs to get her. I had to wait around another hour before for the police to show up while my sons dead bodies rotted away. When the fuck is Miss Snow supposed to be here?"
HOLLY
(startled)
"I-I don't kn-know. She's running late."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"That much is obvious! Useless cunt!"
10.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(scolding Holly)
"This is unacceptable, do you hear?"
HOLLY
"I can offer you a coupon for a free breakfast in the dining room."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"You must be joking! We are mourning our dead for Christ's sake! We want our rooms. He said he's talked to your manager... what more do you need?"
MR. THALLO GREEN
(annoyed)
"Let's go! Dot the i's and cross the t's later!"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Benedict, lets call Miss Snow on the number you reached her on."
SIR BENDICT BLACK IV
(looking around)
"Where is the telephone?"
HOLLY points to a side table bookended by two chairs. There is a black telephone on the table in front of a mirror.
As COL. MUSTARD and SIR BENEDICT turn away from the front desk, a door from behind the desk opens and out steps MISS DIANE SNOW. She is dressed in a white gown with pearls around her neck and at her ears.
MISS DIANE SNOW
(yawning)
"Good Lord, what a way to start a morning."
HOLLY
"They said they talked to you on the phone last night?"
MISS DIANE SNOW
"Yes, woke me up in the middle of one of my happy dreams."
11.
HOLLY
(to Miss Snow)
"They said you talked about a fixed rate for serval floors of rooms."
MISS DIANE SNOW
(rolling her eyes)
"Yes, Holly. I'm not going to turn down business. Start handing out keys."
(to Sir Benedict)
"Sir Benedict, I'm so sorry. I'm afraid I had a hectic morning. My personal hair stylist called in and I had to do this all by myself. It is a disaster."
SIR BENEDICT does not care about her hair or her excuse.
MISS DIANE SNOW
(sales voice)
"We are determined to make your stay here at Aquatine Vistas as comfortable as possible. Everyone in your party will have key access to the private lounge which does in fact still serve..."
(whispering)
"... alcohol."
(normal voice)
"I hope you'll forgive my stupid little Holly for delaying you and your friends the opportunity to kick up your feet and relax. Please, allow me to have some complimentary goodies sent up to your rooms as a way of apologizing for the wait."
SIR BENEDICT nods in approval.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"This is the type of service I expect! Mr. Ash, Mrs. White, grab my thing and let's be off to the penthouse."
MISS DIANE SNOW
"Of course, I'll have the penthouse floor made for your party. Miss Tawny!"
A hotel maid quickly hurries into the Lobby from the Manager's Office. She has red hair peppered with gray.
12.
MISS ELEANOR TAWNY
(curtseying)
"Yes, ma'am?"
MISS DIANE SNOW
"See to it that the maids and valets pay extra attention to the top floors. I'm putting out VIP guests up there."
MISS ELEANOR TAWNY
(nodding)
"Of course, ma'am."
MISS DIANE SNOW
"Oh, and Miss Tawny... leave a note on my desk reminding me to dock Holly for her pay today. She kept these prospective, well-paying guests waiting for far to long."
MISS ELEANOR TAWNY
(nodding slowly)
"Yes, ma'am."
COL. MUSTARD begins to walk off towards the elevators with the others, when he stops and notices a heavily scarred and mutilated man standing in the doorway of a smoky room. The man is holding a billiard cue in his hand. COL. MUSTARD is drawn to both the face and the nearby pool table.
COL. MUSTARD walks over to the man, removes his monocle, and narrows his eyes.
13.
COLONel michael mustard
"I wasn't sure our paths would ever cross again. I always do my cemetery rounds to check... but you never know."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER leans the billiard cue against the wall and offers a hand out to shake. COL. MUSTARD shakes his hand with a tight grip.
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"Once in Sumatra, twice in Morocco, then three times in New England."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I was never in Sumatra."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"And I suppose you tell people that you were only in Morocco once?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Good to see you, old chap."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"You look good for your age."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"You look like shit. What the hell happened to you."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"Care for a drink?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I've been itching for one ever since the hotel manager with the tits said something about a private lounge."
GEN. UMBER laughs and pats COL. MUSTARD on the shoulder.
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
(laughing)
"Jesus, Mike! I missed you. I'll take you to the lounge - I have a key."

14.
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - ELEVATOR - CONTINUOUS
SIR BENEDICT sits in his wheelchair, tapping his hand impatiently on his cane. PROF. VICTOR PLUM flips through his personal journal, mumbling and muttering excerpts to himself and for attention from his father.
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
"... in vast, endless journeys of undiscovered urges..."
(snorting; groaning)
"Oh, goodness! I can't keep any of this. I'll have to burn the whole book."
SIR BENEDICT exhales sharply through his nose.
SIR BENDICT BLACK IV
(irritated)
"Then do it already and stop talking about it."
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
(continuing on)
"Chapter Three, Now to My Amazing Life, by Professor Victor Plum. Devices come in all shapes and sizes. Mine happens to screw onto human skulls...”
(pausing)
“... to evict certain contents, we shall say, are – negligent. Strike the right nerve and you may possibly incapacitate your hostage to do, well, anything really.”‌
SIR BENEDICT glances up at PROF. PLUM with angry, harsh eyes.
SIR BENDICT BLACK IV
"What the hell are you doing? Are you trying to implicate yourself or do you find it amusing to act like an idiot?"
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
(looking down)
"I'm sorry. I'll burn the book."
SIR BENDICT BLACK IV
"You'll stay with me in my suite. There are two rooms."
15.
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
"I will?"
SIR BENDICT BLACK IV
"Yes. I have plans for you, my boy. You are the only child I have left. I won't let you continue down the road you are heading down. I won't have three dead, fucked up, useless sons."
PROF. PLUM closes the journal and turns his full attention to his father.
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
(kowtowing)
"I won't let you down."
SIR BENDICT BLACK IV
"You've already proved yourself to me, Victor. You are subservient. You are deceitful. You are unsinkable."
(pausing)
"The days ahead may be troubling, but I will keep you out of prison if you listen carefully and do everything that I tell you."
PROF. PLUM nods eagerly.
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL Room #709
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE sets her suitcase on a luggage rack in the closet. She unbuckles the straps and opens the suitcase. She begins to hang up her clothes on the wooden coat-hangers when she hears knocking at her door.
MRS. WHITE turns to the door of her room and opens it.
The hallway is empty.
MRS. WHITE furrows her brow and turns back to her room.
She hears the knocking again - this time realizing it is the adjacent hotel room door, not the hallway door.
MRS. WHITE hurries over to the adjacent room's door and unlocks the bolt.
16.
MR. ASH opens the door from the other side and steps into her room.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"They gave us neighboring rooms."
MRS. WHITE is relieved to see him.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Oh, Reggie."
MRS. WHITE throws her arms around MR. ASH's neck.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"How is Sergeant Gray?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"He thinks he killed Dr. Black."
MR. ASH walks over to the windows and looks out at the beach.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"What did he say, exactly?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I-I don't know... a lot of it didn't make sense. He said something about a secret passage in the library. He must have meant the Study..."
MR. ASH turns to face MRS. WHITE.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Blanche, we need to talk."
MRS. WHITE feels her heart beating in her throat.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"About what?"
17.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"About what you think happened after you gave birth to Sergeant gray and about what actually happened."
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - hotel ROOM #1302
MISS SCARLET sits in the window of her and MRS. PEACOCK's penthouse suite. MRS. PEACOCK unpacks her suitcase in the small parlor behind MISS SCARLET.
MISS SCARLET closes her eyes and shivers.
FLASHBACK - ARLINGTON HALL - THREE DAYS AGO
MISS SCARLET walks across the long, mostly bare drawing room. She sighs deeply and approaches MR. CLAY. He is sitting on the only remaining piece of furniture in the room - a chaise lounge.
MISS SCARLET crawls behind him, wrapping her dainty arms around his chest and torso, kissing him lightly as she gets comfortable.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Edward, I think I'm going to settle down with a glass of wine and a book in the library."
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"That sounds lovely."
MR. CLAY kisses her on the neck, running his hand along her body.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Save your energy for impressing Dr. Black with your tennis skills."
MISS SCARLET pulls away from him, teasing him as she sits up and walks across the room. She sways her hips seductively.
MR. CLAY bites his lip.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"What do we really even know about this Dr. Black?"
18.
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"We know that your stepmother used to date him and when she found out he was engaged she threw a huge tantrum."
MISS SCARLET laughs and rushes back over to MR. CLAY on the chaise lounge.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(continuing to laugh)
"It's getting late."
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"You didn't tell me how the opera went."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"It doesn't matter."
MR. EDWARD CLAY
(concerned)
"Vivienne?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Don't worry about it. I'll find work in Connecticut or New York. I'll find work. I will."
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"I know you will. You are so talented. You will always have someone's eyes on you."
BACK TO PRESENT
Int. AQUATINE VISTAS - hoTEL ROOM #1302
MISS SCARLET opens her eyes as she hears the sound of MRS. PEACOCK closing the empty suitcase.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I put all of your clothes in the top and middle drawers."
MISS SCARLET nods without saying anything.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"The valet service is terrible. I ordered poached eggs nearly twenty minutes ago."
MISS SCARLET doesn't respond.
19.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Are you sure that you aren't hungry?"
MISS SCARLET looks up at MRS. PEACOCK with watery eyes.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I need some air."
MISS SCARLET stands up and crosses the suite. She opens the balcony doors and steps out onto the balcony.
EXT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL ROOM #1302 BALCONY - conTINUOUS
MISS SCARLET places her hands on the railing and leans forward, breathing shakily.
She looks up at the clear blue sky, becoming dizzy and disorientated.
MISS SCARLET slowly backs away from the railing until her back is pressed against the glass door to the suite.
She catches her breath and places her hand over her heart as tears begin to fall from her eyes.
MISS SCARLET looks down at the waves crashing onto the sandy shore, thirteen stories below her.
She notices SGT. BENJAMIN GRAY, standing barefoot, in the sand, with his hands in his pockets. GREYSON walks up to him and waves politely.
The two men exchange a couple words and part ways. SGT. GRAY turns back to Aquatine Vistas with a happier demeanor.
MISS SCARLET feels a smile forcing over her lips. She can't help but appreciate the optimistic gestures coming from GREYSON.
20.
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - PRIVATE LOUNGE - conTINUOUS
COL. MUSTARD and GEN. UMBER sit in two overstuffed leather club chairs. They are drinking whiskey together. COL. MUSTARD looks down at the label on the bottle.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"They don't keep this stuff at Blackwell Grange."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
(laughing)
"They probably do, just not where you can reach it."
COL. MUSTARD laughs wildly as he fills his empty glass back up.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"You're probably right. Hugh always was a selfish bugger. He always kept the good sausages and cheeses in the cellar so that the pantry wouldn't get raided by fat, hungry fingers."
GEN. UMBER takes the bottle from COL. MUSTARD and looks at the label with a smile.
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
(in disbelief)
"I can't believe he's finally in hell."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I suppose that's where I thought I'd see you."
GEN. UMBER pours himself more whiskey, laughing silently to himself. He shakes his head as he sips the whiskey.
COL. MUSTARD mumbles a bit to himself in the awkward silence.
21.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I guess I'll say what we are both thinking..."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"Why ruin the pleasantness? I was just starting to think we might be friends."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"You are one of the few people in my life I have actively tried to avoid. Why is it that I keep running into you?"
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"You're the one darkening my doorstep this time, you tell me."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I'm here because Hugh Black was murdered and they are investigating Blackwell Grange."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"If they've moved you out Blackwell Grange then it is game over. Lies, secrets, and murders are going to be exposed for the world to see."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"We'll just have to wait and see."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"I can't wait to pick up the newspaper."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I doubt anything has been said."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"Rubbish. I know Pratton and their hunger for gossip. The Daily Echo would have been to the police station at the crack of dawn."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"You are hoping to watch Blackwell Grange burn to the ground."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"Gladly. You forget which side I'm on."
22.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"No, I haven't forgotten. I just don't bother myself with sides and politics."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"It doesn't matter if you believe in this war or not. You are with Blackwell Grange by default. And when the day comes for blood to be shed, you'd better hope you aren't under that roof."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Something tells me that we'll both be long gone before it ever comes to that."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
(narrowing his eyes)
"You didn't hear it from me..."
COL. MUSTARD becomes alarmed and leans close.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Is Azure on the prowl?"
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"He's docile... for now."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Then what is it?"
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"King Azure is sick. He may not make it through the year."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"The coronation could take months to prepare."
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"Colonel, I've been to Manoir Tombale. I've seen what these people are capable of. Go back to Von Gatow. It's quiet and safe there. You have your little fishing hut and your little speakeasy."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I'm not going back there."
23.
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"Then enjoy the taste you get in your mouth every time someone around you dies."
GEN. UMBER hands COL. MUSTARD the bottle of whiskey.
GENERAL EMANUEL UMBER
"Keep it."
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL ROOM #1208
NURSE AVA SILVER sits with FIVEL DOVE on the edge of the bed. She is going over his curly hair with a wide-toothed comb.
The telephone on the nightstand rings suddenly, startling them both.
NURSE SILVER pauses for a moment, glancing at FIVEL, before picking up the telephone.
Nurse ava silver
"Hello."
HOLLY
(nervously)
"H-Hi. Miss Silver, this is Holly, from the front desk."
There is a moment of silence.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Yes?"
HOLLY
"Inspector Brown called us from the Pinecone Inn..."
HOLLY pauses again, creating more dreadful silence.
NURSE AVA SILVER
(swallowing hard)
"What does he want?"
24.
HOLLY
"The police have recovered Frau Bloom and Miss Dove's bodies..."
NURSE SILVER inhales sharply and looks over at FIVEL.
NURSE AVA SILVER
(breathless)
"Oh..."
HOLLY
"Inspector Brown said he would be coming by later this afternoon to speak with you and the boy... uh... Fable Dove."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Okay, thank you."
NURSE SILVER hangs up the telephone pre-emptively.
FIVEL
(eyes welling up)
"They found her?"
NURSE SILVER nods and embraces the boy.
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL ROOM #709
MRS. WHITE sits on the bed in front of MR. ASH. WADSWORTH chirps from his birdcage.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"When you gave birth to Benjamin, your husband Winslow was already dead."
MRS. WHITE narrows her eyes.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I remember what happened, Reggie."
25.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"There was no reason for you to give the baby to your sister. There was no one to find out about the affair."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"The will, the inheritance, the family house..."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Earl Gray didn't reach the end of his life until Benjamin was five years old."
MRS. WHITE opens her mouth to say something but doesn't speak.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Why did you name him Benjamin if you weren't going to keep him."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I named him for my sister... when she took him..."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"He was five years old when she took him."
MRS. WHITE shakes her head 'no' with tears in her eyes.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"No, that's wrong. He was a baby when she took him."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Blanche..."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(breaking down)
"He was a baby when they came for him..."
MR. ASH closes his eyes and sighs, placing a hand on MRS. WHITE's shoulders.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(in denial)
"He was a baby... he was my baby..."
26.
MR. REGINALD ASH
(sympathetically)
"I'm so sorry, Blanche."
MRS. WHITE covers her mouth and breaks down into tears.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(hyperventilating)
"My little boy... my boy. They took my boy from me. They took him away forever, Reggie... My boy is gone, Reggie. He's gone."
