A Clue Saga

INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL ROOM #709 - NIGHT
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE kicks off her black shoes with a long, frustrated sigh. The old woman sits down on the edge of her bed, reaching for her worn, black purse. She opens the purse and digs around inside - pulling out her flask.
MRS. WHITE unscrews the lid and swallows the entirety of the flask, gasping for air after she is finished. She wipes the gin from her lips with her sleeve.
MRS. WHITE walks over to her suitcase and rummages through her clothes. She pulls out a small candy tin from the bottom of the suitcase. She opens it. It is full of pills.
MRS. WHITE takes two and sits back down on the edge of the bed. She exhaling deeply and slowly lies down, getting comfortable on the mattress. She closes her eyes and begins to relax.
There is a jolting knock at the adjacent HOTEL ROOM belonging to MR. ASH. MRS. WHITE's eyes spring open.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(groaning)
"Bloody hell."
MR. ASH knocks again.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(shouting)
"What do you want?"
MR. ASH gives a muffled, mumbled reply. MRS. WHITE can't hear him.
MRS. WHITE sits forward, throwing her arms down in tired frustration. She stands up and cross the HOTEL ROOM to the adjacent room's door and opens it.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(annoyed)
"What?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"I'm sorry, is it a bad time?"
2.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(exhaling sharply)
"Is it a bad time? Are you serious? What do you want, Reggie?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"I strongly regret the passive behavior that I have..."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(interrupting him)
"You are a weak man, Reginald Ash!"
MR. ASH frowns.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"We were treated terribly by Dr. Black. Yvette knew something was wrong. That poor girl knew how screwed up everything was! Things have always been bad at Blackwell Grange. Ever since High got me pregnant... at least I tried to do something about it. But no you... not with Mabel. First it was Mr. Boddy then it was Mr. Masque... You let it happen! You let Mr. Masque take your wife!"
MR. REGINALD ASH
(shouting)
"I'm tired of it! I'm tired of being just a humble butler. I want my wife back. I want something to wake up for. I'm tired of getting through each day filled with anxiety wondering if something bad is going to happen. We’ve dealt with death before... murders even. But they were always isolated events. Those things that happened at Blackwell Grange... That boy on the tennis net... Frau Bloom..."
(pausing)
"Yvette..."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"That poor girl deserved so much more than the life she got. I was so hard on her... I thought it would make her stronger. Was she murdered, Reggie? Or did she find those photographs and hang herself?"
3.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"I can’t bear to think about it..."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Do you want do get your wife back? Do you really want her back? I’m serious, Reggie! That includes all the work that will come with bringing her back. Are you ready to stop pretending everything is okay?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Yes!"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Then you need to talk to Mr. Green."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Mr. Green?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"T has never supported the mental manipulation pulled by Ian Masque and his brood - that German doctor, that Russian hypnotist."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Monsieur Brunette thinks this is a lost cause. The last time I talked to Mabel she told me to forget her and move on. What if she doesn't want to be rescued."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Listen here, Reginald Ash! I knew Mabel very well. She... She was the only true friend I've ever had. That woman loved you. She loved her life with you. She loved being maid and you being butler. She would go on and on about how happy she was to be employed at the same place as the love of her life."
(pausing)
"I knew that feeling too... before Winslow..."
MRS. WHITE shuts her eyes tight as tears roll down her cheeks.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Blanche..."
4.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(fully crying)
"Bring her back, Reggie. Bring Mabel home. She's your wife and she loves you. She's my friend and I miss her!"
INT. PINECONE INN - HOTEL ROOM #301 - CONTINUOUS
MADAME ROSE BLACK sits in the dark HOTEL ROOM, illuminated by a single candle. She looks deeply into her crystal ball with focus and concentration.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"The unhappiness that lies ahead for these poor, unfortunate people..."
MME ROSE closes her eyes.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"This investigation will bring nothing but trouble. Unlikely unions will be formed. Luck will befall the miserable."
(pausing)
"The murderer will face justice."
MME ROSE opens her eyes and stares deeper into the crystal ball.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"A determined journalist will arrive. And the contents of Hugh's will... it will only continue downhill from there."
MME ROSE stands up and blows out the candle.
There is a short, gentle knock at her HOTEL ROOM door.
MME ROSE takes a steadying breath and switches on the lamp. Smoke from the candle lingers in the air over the crystal ball.
MME ROSE opens the door and is met by INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"My sweet boy."
5.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"I keep seeing their faces, mother."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"The ghosts of the past never truly go away. It just becomes easier to ignore them as time goes on."
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"That place..."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"The spirits in Blackwell Grange are loud."
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"Has Brown interrogated you yet?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"Not until tomorrow."
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"Did you kill him?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"No."
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"Then why did you really come back home?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"Go beyond the lake to fulfill your destiny."
INSP. PRY stares at his mother with sad, tired eyes.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"What does that mean?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I can't remember."
INSP. PRY sighs and turns to leave the room.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"When you talk to Brown, tell him everything you know. Don't hold anything back. That includes telling him about me. It's time he should know... and frankly I don't want to be the one who has to tell him."
6.
MME ROSE nods in agreement.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"If that is what you wish."
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"What do you see happening in the near future?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"As spring turns to summer, the fresh start everyone was so eager to chase will either strengthen or weaken. Some will rise above. Others will rot in the earth. Choose your friends wisely, or better yet - play for your own side."
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"What is beyond the lake?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I can't recall. I saw it in a dream."
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"I'm not driving all the way back to Pratton tonight to find out."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I won't stop you."
INSP. PRY closes his eyes.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"I need to rest. I need time away from that place."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"You are the rightful heir to Blackwell Grange. Go to her."
INSP. PRY grips his fists tightly.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"Why are you always trying to push me away."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"You need to go back there, Lawrence. You know you do. You are fighting the urge to drive back there as we speak."
7.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"I saw Carol and Ethan."
MME ROSE is silent.
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"Carol and Ethan died in a car accident across Pratton. Why am I seeing them at Blackwell Grange?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(trance-like)
"So many dark secrets will be brought to light during this painful, intrusive investigation."
INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY
"Did they die in Blackwell Grange? Did Hugh Black have something to do with their deaths?"
MME ROSE reaches out and touches INSP. PRY on the arm.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"When Hugh learned that Victor was his older half-brother he sent Mr. Green to assassinate him. He didn't want there to be anyone posing a threat to his claim over Blackwell Grange. That is why I kept you a secret. I knew the kind of man Hugh was."
INSP. PRY exits the HOTEL ROOM in a fury of anger, slamming the door loudly in the MME ROSE's face.
MME ROSE remains with her arm outreached to where she once held her son's shoulder.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"You'll forgive me one day for all of this."
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL ROOM #702 - NIGHT
NURSE AVA SILVER quietly enters the HOTEL ROOM. INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN is sitting patiently waiting for her. NURSE SILVER slowly sits down in the taupe colored armchair.
8.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"My apologies for keeping you up so late, Nurse Silver. I need to get through as many one-on-one interrogations as I can."
NURSE AVA SILVER
(quietly)
"I completely understand."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"If you'll forgive the bold way that I'm going to start this - I need to know about the affair between yourself and Hugh Black. The conception of Fivel is... on a lot of minds. What was yesterday's gossip may indeed be tomorrow's reality. Was the relationship between you and Hugh Black consensual?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
(hesitant)
"I had a problem with pain pills at the time. Dr. Black provided them for me. Sometimes I was short on money... so other things were arranged."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And when you learned that you were pregnant with the boy?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"At first I was so excited. I always thought I would make a wonderful mother. But Dr. Black forced me to give him away... the scandal of my pregnancy lead to my pill addiction becoming public knowledge. Dr. Black let me get fired and then graciously hired me to help Professor Plum with those... abominations."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You were coerced into the experimentations."
NURSE AVA SILVER
(tearing up)
"Yes."
9.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Professor Plum has been arrested for what took place in the crypt. He put on a thick coating of manipulation and being pressured into it. Am I to believe you were also forced into it?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Yes. I feared my life. Dr. Black was a controlling, horrible man."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You also carried on a relationship with Edward Clay. Did you ever bring him to Blackwell Grange?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Edward and I were never a serious thing. We went out a few times. We talked a lot. He was very sweet and kind. He had a controlling mother and an absent thrill-seeking father. I had all the pent up anger and sadness. We just got along really well."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You were there when Professor Plum, Sergeant Gray, and Monsieur Brunette found Edward Clay dead?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Yes."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Before we get to that, I'd like to go over the events of the night, starting with the escape of Ben Black from the crypt."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I tried to help Professor Plum look for him in the woods, but it was raining and getting dark out... and the guests were starting to arrive. It was the worst timing."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"That, or it was planned. They found adrenaline in Ben Black's system among the other drugs and chemicals being injected into him."
10.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"You mean when he escaped..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"It was because he was ready and likely instructed to by someone else."
NURSE AVA SILVER
(eyes widening)
"He was never that strong before..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Go on, Nurse Silver. After the woods?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I changed out of my wet clothes and joined the others in the lounge. They were having a pre-dinner reception of champagne and cheeses."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Who was present?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I was talking with Sergeant Gray and Madame Rose. Colonel Mustard and Monsieur Brunette were together. Then Mrs. Peacock, Miss Scarlet, and Edward showed up. I think the Raven's showed up shortly after."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And then dinner was interrupted by John Boddy and Dr. Orchid."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Yes. I took Fivel to the nursery while everyone took turns bickering. Miss Dove showed up and told me that the house was on alert because Ben escaped. I left Miss Dove and Fivel alone to go find Professor Plum. I ran into Edward instead. He said Miss Scarlet was getting water in the kitchen and hadn't returned so he was looking for her. He asked me if I had a moment to talk, so we went into the conservatory."
11.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Go on."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"We talked for a minute about how things used to be and the chances of both of us being here. He talked about being with Miss Scarlet, I got the hint... I-I wasn't trying to start up anything, anyway."
INSP. BROWN holds his pen at the ready, catching NURSE SILVER's every word.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Then Dr. Black came in... I thought something was off, but I suppose Dr. Back always tends to throw the room off a little bit. Especially after our past... my job..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I understand."
NURSE SILVER pauses, staring down at the rug.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Dr. Black just... suddenly pulls out a dagger. It was like a joke or a prank like he was pretending to lunge at Edward... but then..."
(pausing)
"He slashed his throat open. He swung the blade and Edward was down on the floor in a pool of blood. I-I didn't know what to do. I knocked the dagger away from Dr. Black when he turned to me. H-He forced me to the floor and stared choking me..."
NURSE SILVER is fully crying.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I tried so hard to fight back. I clawed and screamed. He was so strong..."
(swallowing hard)
"The next thing I knew, Brunette, Gray, and Professor Plum were standing over me trying to get me to wake up. I couldn't remember what happened for a minute.

NURSE AVA SILVER (CONT'D)
But then they showed me Edward's body... hanging there..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I'm so sorry, Nurse Silver."
NURSE AVA SILVER
(crying into her hands)
"How did my life get here? I wanted to be a nurse... a mother. I just wanted to help people."
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL LOUNGE - CONTINUOUS
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK enters the HOTEL LOUNGE and sees JOHN BODDY sitting at the bar holding a half empty glass of brandy. MRS. PEACOCK smirks as she strides over to the seventeen-year-old.
MRS. PAtRICIA PeACOCK
"What is that, you're drinking?"
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"Brandy."
MASTER BODDY sips it with a wince, barely drinking any of it.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I never cared for the stuff. Maybe if it's mixed with a Cola on a hot summer day."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(sipping again)
"My father used to drink it. I have a little every so often in his honor."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(chuckling)
"Your father was not an honorable man."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I've avoided Colonel Mustard's wicked tongue so far, do I need to stand my ground to you?"
13.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Calm down, boy. I may have hated your father, but I'll have you know that your mother and I go back a long way."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"You knew my mother?"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Oh yes. She introduced me to Hugh."
MASTER BODDY turns to her, fully interested.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"This was in my younger years, mind you. I used to dance, did you know that? I was all feathers and legs back then. Men would bring me pearls and furs. I'd drink champagne out of a golden slipper. It was glamorous. Your mother always enjoyed the vaudeville shows. I always suspected she had a tiny thing for both woman and men."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I never knew."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Oh, your mother was such a gem. We would drink all night and laugh together. I always suspected she was jealous when she brought me to Blackwell Grange and all my attention shifted to Hugh."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"My mother was always a jealous woman."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Oh, it was not subtle. One Christmas she gave me a gift that was meant for Hugh's ex-wife, Olivia. She pretended as if she had forgotten, but I knew it was intended as a slight."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"Did the two of you ever make up?"
14.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I tried. I invited her to the Senator's ball the year he and I met... which was also the year she and your father..."
(pausing)
"I'm sorry."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I miss them both so much. It hurts. I can't stop thinking how they would react to Uncle Hugh being murdered."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"How are you handling it?"
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I think Andrea killed him."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Dr. Orchid? Your fiancée? Why would you think that?"
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"She's not my fiancée anymore. Apparently she and Grandfather have history. I don't trust her. If she lied about not knowing him, she could be after the Black fortune."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I'll admit, I did not like Dr. Orchid the second I saw her. I won't be upset to see her go."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"Something tells me she'll be around for a while."
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS – HOTEL SUITE #1302 – CONTINUOUS
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET rushes over to the rapid knocking on her HOTEL ROOM door.
MISS SCARLET opens the door and NURSE SILVER rushes into the suite, uninvited.
15.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"We need to talk."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Like hell we do..."
MISS SCARLET's brows furrow with anger.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Why the hell didn't you say anything about your relationship with Edward?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Please, Vivienne! It wasn't anything serious. It was a boring pass-time. There was nothing long-term there. I was depressed..."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Then what the hell are you doing here?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Vivienne... Edward told me what happened."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"What are you talking about."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I didn't want to say it in front of your stepmother back at Blackwell Grange, but before he was killed he told me what happened on the train... with that terrible, unpleasant man."
MISS SCARLET's face turns bone white.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(panicking)
"Oh my God... where did you two talk about this? Did anyone overhear you? Did Dr. Black overhear you?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"No one heard us. He practically whispered it to me."
MISS SCARLET puts both hands to her temples and begins to breathe in and out quickly.
16.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I'll keep your secret... but you have to do something for me."
MISS SCARLET looks up at her with shaking hands and tears in her eyes.
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL ROOM #702 - CONTINUOUS
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN enters the HOTEL ROOM, straightening her hair to try and cover the balding center part. It is a futile effort, seeing how INSP. BROWN hasn't even lifted his head to look at her.
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"Am I late?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I haven't been waiting long. You are fine."
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"Okay."
MRS. GREEN nervously sits down in the taupe colored armchair.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Let's talk about the night of the murder. Starting with dinner. John Boddy and Dr. Orchid interrupted it and..."
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"Well, I was feeling a lot of emotions. I used to be married to Dr. Black, but our marriage was cut short when Patricia started an affair with him. Having to see him engaged to a young beautiful blonde like Brenda was heartbreaking. Brenda hated me. She told me that my father was invited but I wasn't."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"This was in the dining room with Dr. Orchid present."
17.
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"Yes, tensions were very high. Some of the guests went to the billiard room after dinner, I went to the lounge. I needed a break from everyone. The lounge was always my favorite room when I lived there..."
MRS. GREEN sighs deeply.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Go on, after the lounge?"
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"I went to the billiard room to try and be social, but only Thallo was there."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"How did the conversation with your husband go?"
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"Oh typical as always. I asked him about Dr. Orchid, he made some lude, sexual comment. He was stinking drunk, again, of course. We left the billiard room after a while and that's when we found out what had happened. Miss Dove was poisoned, Frau Bloom was drown... then she was missing. It was a mess. We ended up going upstairs to corral the other guests into the ballroom. My father said he head a gunshot. Thallo said his fun was missing. When we all got to the ballroom a Sergeant Gray and some others came in soaking wet and told us what happened to Mr. Clay outside. That's when I started panicking and wondering if the killer would get me next."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Why would the killer kill you?"
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"I don't know. I used to be married to Hugh. Now his fiancée is dead, his maid and cook are dead. I was just so scared!

18.
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN (CONT'D)
Then Sir Benedict was back... alive and well. He hates me and my father so much."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Thank you, Olivia. You've been very helpful."
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"Have I?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Yes. You are good to go."
MRS. GREEN stands up to exit the room. She opens the door and is met by DR. ANDREA ORCHID standing there waiting.
MRS. GREEN leaves the HOTEL ROOM into the HALLWAY quickly without making eye contact with DR. ORCHID.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Officer Moss said you wanted to speak with me next."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Yes, please, come in."
DR. ORCHID crosses the room in a quick stride and lens on the arm of the chair, not fully sitting.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Shall we chanter the tale of the dreadful night."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You speak French."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Un peu."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You are engaged to John Boddy, a seventeen year old. How old are you?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"We were engaged. We broke things off after the events of that night..."
19.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"But something still persuaded you to go after someone so young, so rich. I'm wondering, why?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Broken souls have a way of connecting to you if you play the victim. It is especially effective for someone gullible with no self confidence."
INSP. BROWN closes his eyes and proceeds to write in his notepad.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You came to dinner uninvited. Tell me about the unexpected arrival."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Well, John and I had been staying in town for a little while. He was feeling homesick so we decided that I should get to know his hometown nice and well before trekking up to Blackwell Grange."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And you were received... well?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Hardly. The fiancée, ex-wife, and ex-lover all jumped on me like a pack of wolves. You'd think they were after John and not Hugh."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Do you know anyone besides John?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I'm well-aware of the Black family and who they are. I've heard about the Senator's wife and her many dead husbands. Colonel Mustard came up a few times in my childhood. I was raised by a rich Lord after my parents died."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Lord Lavender?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"My, you've done your homework, Inspector."
20.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I always do my digging. Someone came in earlier and called their therapist directly after. I called him straight back after she left. Interesting conversation."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Tricky man."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I'm thorough."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"What more can I tell you, if you know so much?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Tell me your movements after dinner."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Well, John took me straight to his room where we intended on retiring for the night."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"What prevented that?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Curiosity. I wanted to see the mansion. I asked John to show me around. We went to the library, the study... ultimately we ventured back upstairs. But on the way back, I heard something strange."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"What did you hear?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Madame Rose and Dr. Black were arguing outside of his bedroom. This was before Yvette was found dead and the house was in a full frenzy."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"What were they arguing about."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I'm not entirely sure of the context of the conversation.

If you'll indulge in my speculation, Inspector..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Of course."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I think Hugh Black has a secret child."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Thank you, Dr. Orchid. Please go on."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Well, I went upstairs and John left his room shortly after. I can't recall why... I'm not sure if I really cared. I was so tired. So Then all of the chaos downstairs with Mr. Clay and Sir Benedict erupted and John brought me down to the ballroom. It was a nightmare watching them take Hugh to the cellar. I know it was necessary to restrain him... but it still felt awful to partake in."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Thank you, Dr. Orchid. I'll be in touch.
DR. ORCHID stands up fully from the arm of the chair.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"You know who did it, don't you?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I know who killed Edward Clay and Yvette. I'm not sure about the rest."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Are you suggesting that there is more than one killer?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
(dismissing her)
"Have a good night, Dr. Orchid."

INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE – HALL – BEFORE MIDNIGHT
INSP. PRY enters the dark, empty HALL. He looks up at the unlit chandelier, catching sparkles off the moonlight shining through the stained glass.
INSP. PRY passes the LOUNGE door where he hears the voice of his dead wife, CAROL calling from within.
MRS. CAROL PRY
"You can still go back, Larry. It's not too late."
INSP. PRY turns back to the lounge doorway as CAROL and ETHAN appear in the shadows before him.

EThAN PRY
"Daddy, please. Just go to bed. Don't do this."

INSP. PRY ignores their ghostly pleas and continues deeper into the darkness of the mansion.

MISS SCARLET sits alone in her suite, shaking and crying. There is another knock at her door. She wipes her eyes and opens it. GREYSON stands there with a warm smile on his face.
GREYSON
"I'm sorry. I know it's really late."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"You're fine, Greyson."
GREYSON

MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET

GREYSON
"I'm so, so sorry, Vivienne. I know you are going through a lot, believe me, I know. I lost my sister Julia over the winter and I haven't been myself since. It takes a lot of strength to pull yourself together and make it through each day. You have that strength. It's going to be okay."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Thank you, Greyson. I... I don't know what to do. For Edward, I mean. No one really knew him. Who is going to show up to his funeral?"
GREYSON
"I'll be there."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I just... I loved him. I want something personal. Something real. A real way to say good bye to him."
GREYON thinks for a moment.
GREYSON
"I have a boat. We could go out, at sunset. We could have a candle-light vigil for him. I could light a candle for my sister Julia. I still haven't fully said goodbye to her. She was my twin... from the beginning she was always there. Then one day she just isn't."

GREYSON

MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I want to do the candle thing. I think it will help. I... I'm just tired of people staring at me feeling bad. A funeral will just make that feeling even worse. I need something private and meaningful."
GREYSON
"Then it's a plan."
GREYSON holds out his hand for MISS SCARLET. She shakes his hand tightly.
INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL ROOM #702 - CONTINUOUS
INSP. BROWN opens the HOTEL ROOM door for SIR BENEDICT BLACK as he wheels himself into the room.

INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
(sighing)
"I don't know where to begin here..."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"Allow me to help - I was drugged, poisoned, and subdued against my own will by my son Hugh Black. He threatened staff members - Blanche White and Reginald Ash with death if they were to disobey his order or deviate in any way."
25.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Was there any attempt made in the seven years of confinement to get help or escape?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"Mrs. White and I concocted a plan that involved a mannequin's arm or a syringe full of sugar water when Dr. Black observed her administering mild poison to me."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Why was Dr. Black poisoning you?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"To keep me weak. To keep me from fighting back."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And you've regained your strength since the poison was stopped?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"I am an old man, Inspector. I didn't get much exercise in that tiny attic room."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"What are your intentions now that you have your life back."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"I intend on talking to Hugh's lawyer about retaining my legal claim for Blackwell Grange."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Unless you are found guilty of the perversions that took place."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"I was locked in the attic. I had no knowledge of what was going on below me. Mrs. White and Mr. Ash would only tell me as much as they could, and liberally at that!"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You shot and killed your son, Benedict the fifth."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"He was mad."
26.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"It was your choice to keep him locked up in the crypt."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"I never tested on that boy! I was trying to save him from the world. The courts would have hanged my son! I paid for the finest doctors and the best medicine that money could buy. I tried everything I could to remove the bloodlust from Ben. We tried so many time. We gave him a pet cat. It was good at first. He loved the cat. The cat would purr and curl up with him in that dark crypt. But then after about a month, he would kill the cat."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"How long did this go on?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"Inspector, do you have any children?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"No."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"Then you will never understand the things one will do for their children. They wanted to hang him... a little boy. He didn't know what he was doing."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Alice Blue and Beatrice Black were murdered with a bowie knife by that little boy."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"He didn't know what he was doing."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I want you to talk to me about that night."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"I'm not under investigation for that night... I'm under investigation for the night my two boys died."
27.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Tell me about the night your wife was killed."
SIR BENEDICT stands up from his wheelchair and points his cane at INSP. BROWN.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"Don't ask that question again. I will walk out of this room and answer nothing else."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You have nothing else to answer for. I'm through. Have a good night, Sir Benedict. I'd go to a doctor and make sure that the toxins administered haven't caused long-term damage."
SIR BENEDICT narrows his eyes at INSP. BROWN.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"You aren't going to ask me about the night of the murders?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You were in the attic all night, weren't you?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"Ah, but wouldn't you like to know what I saw from my attic window?"
INSP. BROWN leans forward with interest.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
(changing his mind)
"You know what? Maybe I didn't see anything."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"What do you want, Sir Benedict?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"I want Victor out of jail and cleared of all charges. Everything goes onto Hugh Black's head. Frau Bloom, Yvette, that boy on the tennis net. Do you understand?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"What did you see from your window, Sir Benedict?"
28.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK IV
"It's about what happened to Miss Dove..."
EXT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - WOODS - MIDNIGHT
INSP. PRY stands in the charred grass in the clearing where MISS DOVE's burned remains have been removed from.
INSP. PRY looks through the trees towards the lake. The buzzing and chirping of crickets and locusts fill the night air.
INSP. PRY continues towards the edge of the lake and begins to follow the shore deeper and deeper into the woods.
An owl hoots loudly from above, startling him.

INSP. PRY continues deeper and deeper until he is on the complete opposite side of the lake, staring at the shadow back of Blackwell Grange - the ballroom windows, the conservatory, and boat house.

INSP. PRY turns around and looks into the woods behind him. He sees the faint glow of a yellow light on a thick black birch trunk.

Cautiously, INSP. PRY approaches the dim light. As he approaches the birch tree, he sees the source - a derelict CABIN with the shutters pulled nailed tight to the window frames. Yellow light shines through the old shutters onto the landscape of the dark woods.
INSP. PRY slowly and quietly approaches the front door of the CABIN. He pulls open the front door with a loud creak.
INT. DERELICT CABIN - GREAT ROOM - CONTINUOUS
INSP. PRY steps into a warm great room - leather sofas and chairs, a roaring fire in a massive cobblestone hearth.
There are cans of food and and bowls of partially eaten soup sitting out on the coffee table.
INSP. PRY steps forward to examine the left-over food when he hears a loud creak in the floorboards behind him.
In the darkened KITCHEN doorway, MISS BRENDA DOVE stands with a SHOTGUN pointed at him.
29.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"You weren't supposed to find me."
