A Clue Saga

Int. Aquatine vistas - hotel dining room - evening
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN looks around the HOTEL DINING ROOM at the eager, anxious, and grief stricken faces before him.
He pulls out his notepad from his jacket pocket and flips through several pages. He reads quietly to himself, licking his lips a bit as he does.
Inspector winfield brown
”Before we begin, I’d like to go over a matter of great importance.”
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO and INSPECTOR LAWRENCE PRY stand on either side of INSP. BROWN, glaring out at the suspects.
DET. AMARILLO grinds his teeth in disgust.
INSP. PRY makes direct eye contact with each individual person in the room - expect MADAME ROSE.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
”We’ve searched Blackwell Grange from sky to the ground. Every room, attic, tower, cellar, and sub-cellar has been thoroughly searched. Though we have figured out a great deal, there is still a lot we need to learn.”
SIR BENEDICT BLACK stares at INSP. BROWN with a sharp, penetrating stare.
MR. ASH and MRS. WHITE exchange uncomfortable glances.

SIR BENEDICT gives a reassuring look to MR. ASH, tapping the top of his cane gently.
MRS. WHITE looks towards SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY with tears in her eyes. She mouths the words "I love you".
2.
SGT. GRAY does his best to focus on INSP. BROWN and ignore the rest of the room.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
”Within the first hour of the investigation, Inspector Pry figured out which murder took place in which room before the bodies were moved around.”
INSPECTOR PRY nods his head with a wide smile.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
”So we are in the final leg of the investigation. Detective Amarillo has gathered evidence, items, weapons, buttons, bits of hair, and clumps of dirt. We are ready, ladies and gentlemen."
There is a nervous shift and whisper of mumbles.
INSP. BROWN extends an arm towards SIR BENEDICT in the center of the room.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Sir Benedict, you shot and killed your son, Benedict the Fifth. You shot him in the head, and yet you sit here with no remorse over the matter."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
(offended)
"The way I grieve is my bloody business."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Ah, but Ben isn't the only son you lost that night. Hugh was killed after you were brought downstairs."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Are you insinuating I had something to do with Hugh's death?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Killing two sons in one night would not be unthinkable."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Look at me!"
SIR BENEDICT indicates the wheelchair he is sitting in.
3.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I've seen you stand on that cane, we've all seen you stand on that cane. You even explained to me how you've managed to maintain your strength."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"My strength is still diminished, Inspector. I am eighty-six years old."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Hugh was shot in the side of the head with a pistol. If you have the strength to fire a rifle at Ben, you surely could have put Hugh in your wheelchair and taken him to the cellar."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"These are baseless accusations! I'll have no more. I was with Mr. Ash the entire time."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Mr. Ash? The man with the strongest motive?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Me?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Oh, yes! You have been the prime suspect from the start."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Why me?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Because you are actively suffering. The agony of not knowing what is currently happening to your wife each and every day is arguably worse than the pain of losing a loved one years ago.
INSP. BROWN moves his eyes to COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD.
4.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And the lies you were fed, by people you thought you could rely on. You have always been a time-bomb of anger and violence. Just look at what you did to Master Boddy."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Hugh was like a brother to me. And Benedict was like a father."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And what of your real father, Colonel? Do you still carry that anger in your heart every day?"
COL. MUSTARD refuses to look INSP. BROWN in the eye.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I've forgiven them. They were trying to protect me from myself. I was a self-destructing mess. My grief and anger have always been an issue. They understood that and made a choice."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And what of the truth you learned from Herr Gold? That Hugh Black was the man who arranged for Lorraine's torturous murder? Did your anger spiral out of control?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I didn't kill those people!"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"No one said that you did, Colonel. I am not trying to find out what happened to the bodies found around Blackwell Grange. I'm only focused on the body at the foot of the cellar stairs."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I didn't kill Hugh Black!"
INSP. BROWN turns his attention to MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
5.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Miss Scarlet, was your relationship with Edward Clay serious? What I mean is - was it going somewhere long-term?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"We were looking at the idea of a future together. I would like to say we were both serious."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And you never knew he legally changed his named from Christopher to Edward? Was he aware of the many, many male suitors you had around the time you two began to take things seriously?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"My past was just that! I felt no need to tread through the afterburn of my mistakes."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"When you learned about the affair he had with your stepmother, how did you take it? Did you harbor any ill-feelings deep down?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I figured it out shortly after the two of them started. I-I felt betrayed. The man I was actually starting to feel something for... and the woman that keeps trying to prove to me she can be a good mother-figure..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Did you ever forgive him?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(tearing up)
"I was trying. I was always trying to... but now..."
(pausing)
"Every day his voice becomes harder to remember."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Your stepmother tells me that she's seen you with that chauffeur, Greyson?

6.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN (CONT'D)
Would it be too presumptuous of me to suggest that you are moving on from an emotional tragedy as you've displayed in the past?"
MISS SCARLET does not respond to INSP. BROWN but instead stares daggers at MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(turning red)
"Inspector, please..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And then there is you!"
INSP. BROWN points to MRS. PEACOCK.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Why did you come back after twenty years? Or has it truly been that long? You've made such a big deal in stating the length of time you've been gone, I'm starting to wonder if it is even true, considering how well you handled yourself as you entered the mansion."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I was overcome with the neglect and pain... the suffering I experienced as my bags were packed for me and left at the front door."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
(pushing her)
"And the child?"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(shouting)
"I lost our baby only days before he threw me out on my ass! I never even held her... they took her lifeless body away from me. Then Hugh sent me away!"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And you never looked back, did you Patricia? All the money you had and you never looked into what happened to you.

7.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN (CONT'D)
You knew the kind of man Hugh Black was! You knew the kind of tricks he played!"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"What the hell are you talking about?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"The stillborn, Mrs. Peacock! Dr. Black kept Fivel from Nurse Silver, Sergeant Gray from Mrs. White... did you ever consider the possibility that he kept your child from you?"
MRS. PEACOCK feels the room closing in around her. Her chest becomes cold and her hands shake uncontrollably as she tries to lay them on the table.
MRS. PEACOCK tries to speak but can't manage to sputter out any words.
Tears fall down MRS. PEACOCK's face.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Your child is still alive, Patricia. We did some digging around and she's out there, in Louisiana."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I don't..."
MRS. PEACOCK covers up her face with her hands and lowers her head to the table.
She lets out a blood-curdling scream. The pitch is atmospheric, piercing, and shrill.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Mrs. Peacock, I'm sorry."
MRS. PEACOCK tries to stand up and stumbles into the chairs at the table behind her.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I can't... I need."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I need you to take a seat, Mrs. Peacock."
8.
MRS. PEACOCK throws herself down to her chair, emotionally drained, anxious, and shivering.
MADAME ROSE BLACK reaches her hand out and places it on top of MRS. PEACOCK's hand - startling her at first. She slowly pats the top of her hand and shushes her soothingly.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And what about you, Sergeant?"
INSP. BROWN points to SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY. MRS. WHITE pats him on the knee.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"One of Pratton's police officer's turns out to be the secret love-child of Hugh Black and his housekeeper. How do you deal with learning that in such a short period of time before Dr. Black is killed?"
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"The betrayal that I experienced does not make me a murderer."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And what of the medication you are taking? Fighting off the insanity that flows through the family tree like sap?"
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"I suffer from blackouts from time to time... sleep walking... I'm not dangerous when I'm like that. I just wander..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Until the day you aren't?"
INSP. BROWN turns his focus to MADAME ROSE.‌
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You came back here to die, Rose? Or did you come back to make certain others would live?"
9.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"Things were out of hand. The treatment of Ben... my father..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Why didn't you go to the police?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"What would they have done? Are you serious, Inspector? Is that honestly all you have to say to me?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"I want to know why you came back home to a family that never wanted you."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"Because I had no where else to go."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And now that Hugh is dead?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I can live at home in peace."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Rose, we both know your mind likes to play little tricks. You think you know more than everyone else. You always predict these dark horrifying things, and then they always happen to come true. Is there a reason for that?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I've seen things. I've heard things. You don't have to believe me."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Oh, I do believe that you have seen things. I do believe that you have heard things. I just don't know how much merit they hold in a family without a history of clairvoyance. The only thing your family has passed down is grey eyes and insanity."
INSP. BROWN turns his attention to MASTER JOHN BODDY.
10.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And the Boddy's are madder than the Black's. So one could only imagine what goes through the head of their spawn."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I hold no anger or ill-intention towards my Uncle. I didn't know Frau Bloom or Mr. Clay. If we were being investigated for the murder of Colonel Mustard, by all means arrest me - I probably did it."
(pausing to laugh)
"My parents were wise and capable. The madness went to Uncle Hugh and that monster in the crypts."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Did she pressure you to come home early?"
INSP. BROWN points toward DR. ANDREA ORCHID.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"Yes. I wanted to stay in Pratton and visit the locals for a few more days before coming back home. I thought the rumor of my return would be more thrilling than showing up unannounced and unexpected."
INSP. BROWN moves his accusing finger to DR. ORCHID.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Why?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I couldn't stand thinking of Benedict being trapped in that attic any longer."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"So you'd do anything you could to free him? How did you find out about Sir Benedict's livelihood?"
11.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Lord Lavender. He adopted me before he re-married. He always opened up and trusted me with his secrets. He knew the corruption of that family couldn't last much longer. For more than one hundred years the Blackwell family tilled fields of gold until they moved to America, renamed as the Black family, pockets filled to begin a legacy in the New World."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Was the sole purpose of meeting and romancing John Boddy to gain access to Blackwell Grange."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Yes. I think we've been over that, already."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"How are you with firearms, Dr. Orchid?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Guns are messy. Plants, toxins, and poisons are much cleaner. Not my style, I'm afraid."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Dr. Orchid, when you left the ballroom, you went where?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I tried to get into the study, but it was locked."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Strange... weren't you on your way to the study while I was searching through your luggage?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"No, I don't believe so?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You were being very sneaky. Trying to slip past us."
12.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"The study door was locked, I couldn't get in. What's your point?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"My point is that it only takes a few seconds to notice a door is locked. Then what did you do?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I went into the library..."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Ah! Careful! Olivia was in the library."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
(continuing)
"I went into the library. Olivia was not there. Then I checked the dining room."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Who did you see?"
DR. ORCHID shifts her eyes around the room nervously.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I didn't kill Hugh Black!"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"No, but I've caught you in a lie. Lies have a way of tripping people up - especially when they don't expect anyone saw through them."
INSP. BROWN turns his attention to NURSE SILVER.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Nurse Silver, the details of what happened to you and Mr. Clay are very important."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I already told you what happened to me. Please don't make me relive that moment."
NURSE SILVER begins to shake with anxiety.
13.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Yes, but Ava, I've heard the story two different ways. The version you tell, simply doesn't make sense."
NURSE SILVER shakes her head.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"No, I told you what I know."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Why don't you go ahead and tell it again for everyone here?"
NURSE SILVER looks around the room, locking eyes with MISS SCARLET. The tears built up in NURSE SILVER's eyes fall down her cheeks.
NURSE SILVER doesn't speak.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You told me that you were strangled unconscious and when you woke up you had no idea where you were."
NURSE SILVER shakes her head 'yes' quickly with tight, quivering lips.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"But when Monsieur Brunette, Sergeant Gray, and Professor Plum found you it was too foggy to see where Mr. Clay's body was hanging. Yet you managed to point to it. You led them so see the display."
NURSE SILVER looks into INSP. BROWN's eyes as tears continue to stream out of her own.
NURSE SILVER leans forward and kisses FIVEL on the top of the head.
NURSE SILVER slowly stands up from her chair.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"Do you have something to confess?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
(taking a breath)
"I-I...

NURSE AVA SILVER (CONT'D)
I tried to f-frame Hugh Black for murder... I killed Edward, Olga, Yvette, and Brenda."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"But you weren't working alone were you?"
NURSE SILVER closes her eyes tight and shakes her head 'no'.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"You had help, that much is clear."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"It was her..."
NURSE SILVER keeps her eyes shut and extends a long pointed finger across the room to MRS. OLIVIA GREEN.
There are several gasps around the room. DR. WALTER RAVEN stands up away from the table in shock.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"Olivia?"
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"I didn't do it!"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Give it up, Liv. We can't hide it any longer."
(confessing tearfully)
"I poisoned Frau Bloom's favorite marmalade. I poisoned Miss Dove's wine at dinner. Olivia killed Yvette in the billiard room and dragged her upstairs to Hugh's bedroom. I killed Edward in the conservatory. But... we didn't kill Hugh. We wanted him to take the fall."
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"And it almost worked, if Mrs. White hadn't let him out."
NURSE SILVER watches as OFFICER MOSS approaches her with a pair of handcuffs.
15.
NURSE AVA SILVER
(panicking)
"Wait! Wait! Please!"
NURSE SILVER crouches down to FIVEL and brings his face close to hers.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I love you so much, don't you ever forget that! I did this to free us from those evil people. I'm not a monster, Fivel. Don't let those people poison your mind against me. I'm good!"
FIVEL stares at NURSE SILVER with his mouth open in disbelief. Tears are pouring out of his eyes.
FIVEL
"Get off of me!"
FIVEL shoves her hard.
FIVEL
(shaking his head 'no')
"You are not my mother. You aren't her. You..."
FIVEL breaks down into tears and drops his head into MRS. WHITE's lap.
MRS. GREEN lets out a scream in horror as DET. AMARILLO pulls her out of her chair and places handcuffs of her.
OFFICER MOSS leads NURSE SILVER away from FIVEL and towards the back of the room where they meet up with DET. AMARILLO and MRS. GREEN.
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"You can't do this! You have no evidence! This isn't right!"
NURSE SILVER lowers her head in shame as OFFICER MOSS unlocks the HOTEL DINING ROOM doors.
DET. AMARILLO and OFFICER MOSS escort NURSE SILVER and MRS. GREEN out of the room.
SIR BENEDICT begins a small round of applause. MISS SCARLET and MRS. PEACOCK do not clap.
16.
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
"This is all quite unconventional. I apologize for the harsh information shared publicly."
MRS. PEACOCK shakes her head in disbelief.
MISS SCARLET begins to cry as she lights a cigarette.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"What about Hugh's murderer?"
INSPECTOR WINFIELD BROWN
(clearing his throat)
"Yes, on to that..."
INT. POLICE CRUISER - coNTINUOUS
The door to the backseat slams loudly at MRS. GREEN's right side. She looks over at NURSE SILVER with wide, alarmed eyes.
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"What the hell was that? You tell them right now that I had nothing to do with this!"
NURSE SILVER watches DET. AMARILLO and OFFICER MOSS standing outside the POLICE CRUISER at the hood of the car filing out paperwork.
NURSE AVA SILVER
(out of breath)
"Just, shut up. It's over. This is what is happening. You need to start living with it."
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"I never did anything to you! I don't deserve this! They are going to hang us for this."
NURSE SILVER closes her eyes.
FLASHBACK - BLACKWELL GRANGE - WEEKS AGO
17.
INT. BILLIARD ROOM - NIGHT
NURSE AVA SILVER drinks vodka alone at the bar. MISS BRENDA DOVE enters the room and sits beside her.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"How comforting, my nanny is a drunk."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I'm off the clock. What does it matter?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"What are you drinking about?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Do you really want to know?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"It can't hurt to have a friend."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I'm not your friend, Brenda."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Okay... maybe friend was the wrong word. We are sisters in suffering."
(pausing)
"We have both endured unthinkable abuse. We have both been used as pawns in someone else's game..."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I just wanted to help people..."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Keep telling yourself that, sweetheart."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Dr. Black cost me everything. He was the one who got me addicted to pills in the first place... then when I couldn't pay."
(shuttering)
"He actually said to me pussy pays the price."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"He needs to be stopped."
18.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"There's nothing that could take him down."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"What about a series of murders from years ago? Dug back up."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"He'll tell a lie, pay it away, he can't..."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"What if the police think he's starting to murder people again."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"What are you saying?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Innocent people go missing every day. What if they are found here."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"That's a terrifying thought..."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"What about that dinner party? He wants to have close friends over to meet me and Fivel before the garden party."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Brenda, you can't be serious?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"He needs to be stopped. Think about it. In two weeks time, Hugh could be behind bars for life.."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"How many people have to die?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Only a couple. The cook, Frau Bloom. Her brother is an Admiral in Prince Azure's militia. He has photographic evidence of the corpses from a series of murder in Monte Carlo. We hide the pictures in a passageway, recreate two or three deaths, call the police, and it is over for Hugh."
19.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Who else needs to die?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"I'll fake my own death, make it look like Hugh killed me. I need to disappear anyway and be out of Azure and my mother's lives for good."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Who else?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
(whispering)
"Yvette. I think I can get her to help us with part of this... but we can't keep her alive. She'll squeal to the police like a pig. She doesn't have the spine for this."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Then why include her at all?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"She listens at every keyhole and corner anyway, we don't need her finding anything out. We tell her what she can handle, and then we kill her. Something quick."
NURSE SILVER takes a long steady drink from the bottle of vodka.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"How do I live with myself after this? What if I'm caught?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"All that matters is the safety of Fivel. If you get caught, you need to keep me out of harms way. Think of the boy."
NURSE AVA SILVER
(tearfully)
"I will."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Always think of the boy. You had a son of your own, once?"
NURSE SILVER nods, drinking more.
20.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"You would do anything to protect him if you could do things over again? Help me keep Fivel safe. Hugh will corrupt him."

INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL SUITE #1302 - NIGHT
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK and MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET enter the SITTING ROOM of the SUITE. Both women are distraught.
DR. JONAH PRUSSIAN is waiting on the armchair near the back of the room.
DR. JONAH PRUSSIAN
"How did it go?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"They still don't know who killed Hugh Black. You two need to talk."
MISS SCARLET heads towards her bedroom door and enters, slamming the door loudly behind her.
DR. JONAH PRUSSIAN
"What happened?"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(crying)
"She's alive, Dr. Prussian!"
DR. JONAH PRUSSIAN
"Who's alive?"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"My daughter. The stillborn. Inspector Brown did some digging and found out that Hugh lied to me about her death. She never died..."
DR. PRUSSIAN stands up and embraces MRS. PEACOCK.
DR. JONAH PRUSSIAN
"This is wonderful news."
MRS. PEACOCK shakes her head 'no'.
21.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"No, it's not. I don't know how to be a good mother. I wasn't supposed to be a mother... I..."
DR. JONAH PRUSSIAN
"Patricia! Patricia, please calm down. You are going to be okay. This is exciting news. She is a grown woman. The hardest part of mothering is over. Twenty-years-old? She needs you to be her friend - her confidante. This is an amazing new chapter of your life, Patricia."
MRS. PEACOCK sits down on the sofa, racked with uncertainty.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I don't know..."
DR. JONAH PRUSSIAN
"Just take it one day at a time, Patricia. Your grief is over. The healing process has already begun."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I feel as though my grief is only just beginning."

NURSE AVA SILVER
"Vivienne... Edward told me what happened."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"What are you talking about."
22.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I didn't want to say it in front of your stepmother back at Blackwell Grange, but before he was killed he told me what happened on the train... with that terrible, unpleasant man."
MISS SCARLET's face turns bone white.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(panicking)
"Oh my God... where did you two talk about this? Did anyone overhear you? Did Dr. Black overhear you?"
NURSE AVA SILVER
"No one heard us. He practically whispered it to me."
MISS SCARLET puts both hands to her temples and begins to breathe in and out quickly.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"I'll keep your secret... but you have to do something for me."
MISS SCARLET looks up at her with shaking hands and tears in her eyes.
NURSE AVA SILVER
"You need to make sure that Fivel goes to my mother if anything happens to me."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"If anything..."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Vivienne! I need you to listen to me. Fivel will go to my mother, Francine Silver. She lives on the north side of Pratton. She's at St. Elva's every Sunday for church."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I-I-I don't understand."
NURSE AVA SILVER
"Please, Vivienne. Promise me, you will make sure Fivel goes to my mother."
23.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(quickly agreeing)
"I promise!"

INT. AQUATINE VISTAS - HOTEL ROOM #701 - conTINUOUS
DR. WALTER RAVEN enters his suite with wide, unnerved eyes. He unties his bowtie and rushes towards the bottle of gin on the desk. He unscrews the lid and drinks directly from the bottle.
FLASHBACK - BLACKWELL GRANGE - THE DINNER PARTY
INT. BILLIARD ROOM - NIGHT
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY kneels at DR. HUGH BLACK's body. His hand lingers next to the WRENCH laying in a bloody pool by his head.
SGT. GRAY looks up to the shadow in the doorway. DR. WALTER RAVEN stands up wide eyes.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"What have you done?"
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"I-I-I don't..."
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"You killed him... we... we have to get rid of the body."
SGT. GRAY picks up the WRENCH and looks at the blood-covered thing, growing dizzy as he stands up. His eyes begin to flutter.
DR. RAVEN grabs SGT. GRAY to steady him and then pushes him off towards the door.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"Go clean that thing in the kitchen sink! Now!"
SGT. GRAY staggers out of the billiard room, barely lucid.
DR. RAVEN lifts up DR. BLACK by the shoulder, preparing to flip the body over.
24.
DR. BLACK suddenly grunts and begins to move on his own.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"Good God, man!"
DR. BLACK stands up, holding his hand to the bloody wound on his skull. He winces in pain, closing his left eye as blood seeps down into it.
DR. HUGH BLACK
"You! You did this!"
DR. RAVEN pulls out MR. GREEN's PISTOL and points it at DR. BLACK.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"We need to get you some first aid and then we're taking you back to the cellar."
DR. BLACK gnashes his teeth together angrily.
DR. HUGH BLACK
"You!"
DR. RAVEN pulls the trigger.
BANG
The bullet enters DR. BLACK's skull between his fingers, digging deeper into the WRENCH's wound.
DR. BLACK instantly slumps back to the floor.
DR. RAVEN begins to pant, uncontrollably. He turns to the bar and searches for a bottle of gin.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID enters the room and covers her mouth.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"You didn't!"
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"I did!"
DR. RAVEN finds the bottle of gin and unscrews it, drinking several large gulps from it.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"And I don't want to think about it. I want it to leave my brain."
DR. ORCHID stares down at DR. BLACK's body with wide eyes and high eyebrows.
25.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"I heard the gunshot from the hall. Someone else might have heard it too."
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"We need to move the body."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Where?"
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"Back to the cellar. Let the police make the discovery."

Int. Daily echo - office - THE NEXT morning
MS. KIMBERLY MANGO sits at her desk typing away quickly at her typewriter.
A man with thinning white hair and a teal business suit enters the OFFICE. He has a cigar in his mouth.
MS. MANGO looks up at him and glances around the OFFICE to see how many other people are present - only TWO JOURNALISTS.
Ms. Kimberly mango
”Mr. Meadow-Brook, how are you? I‘m afraid your wife isn’t working today. We only do the gossip column on Thursday and Fridays.”
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK takes his cigar from his mouth as he speaks.
MR. Miles Meadow-Brook
”I’m here for you, Ms. Mango.”
MS. KIMBERLY MANGO
”Me?”
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
”Tell your little birds to start typing and to consider this conversation an interview.”
26.
MR. MEADOW-BROOK glares at the TWO JOURNALISTS whispering to each other from the far other side of the long OFFICE.
MS. KIMBERLY MANGO
”They always take notes from any guest speaking in my office.”
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
(smirking)
”Wonderful. Make sure you get every word.”
One of the JOURNALISTS sits down and begins pecking away at the typewriter.
Mr. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
”There will be no more headlines about Blackwell Grange, no more slander towards the Black family, and you will not trespass on their property. If you do not comply, you will be facing serious lawsuits.”
(holding up a hand)
”The family has been through enough already. Go find something else to write about before you end up in a holding cell waiting for a court date.”
Ms. KIMBERLY MANGO
”If you think I’m afraid of the police, you have severely underestimated me. My mother and father died while protesting mass deforestation. There is a stubborn resilience inside of me that hears what you are saying and truly understands where you are coming from - but I just simply do not care.”
MR. MEADOW-BROOK stamps out the burning cherry of his cigar onto the front page of the morning’s newspaper.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
”Ms. Mango, this vendetta you have...”
(pausing)
”How should I word this? You aren’t a sly, cunning cat hunting a mouse. You are the cheese - a big stinky piece of cheese. And every mouse and rat can smell where you are.”
27.
MS. KIMBERLY MANGO
”The smelliest cheese works the best in mousetraps.”
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
”Some rodents are too clever for baits, hooks, and traps.”
MS. MANGO stares back at MR. MEADOW-BROOK with a condescending snarl.
Mr. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
”Even your sharp tongue cannot protect you.”
EXT. Pratton police department - GaLLOWS - late morning
In the center of the dry, gray courtyard are the GALLOWS. Pratton POLICE OFFICERS stand with their backs to the windows and walls of the POLICE DEPARTMENT around them.
The sound of a single crow echoes off of the walls of the courtyard.
COMMISSIONER FOREST, DET. AMARILLO, INSP. PRY, INSP. BROWN, OFFICER MOSS, OFFICER FROST, and MISS ECRU stand by a row of chairs behind the GALLOWS.
A brown noose swings lightly in the breeze from where it hangs at the GALLOWS. NURSE AVA SILVER stares up at it as she is escorted up the platform’s staircase by two scrawny officers she's never seen before. They both have sour faces.
NURSE SILVER counts each step slowly as her feet carry her to the wooden platform.
She looks out at faces of the people gathered in the courtyard. POLICE, TOWNSFOLK - faces she knew well and strangers alike. The MEDICAL STAFF from the hospital she once worked at has gathered to one side.
They all watch with hate in their eyes as the Murderess of Blackwell Grange is positioned over the hatch door.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK stands limply on his cane in the crowd, biting his lip as NURSE SILVER makes eye contact with him.
28.
NURSE SILVER's eyes water up as she sees SIR BENEDICT, but she does not let a tear fall from her eyes. She holds her head up straight, looking away from SIR BENEDICT - away from everyone.
NURSE SILVER watches as the birds fly free from treetop to treetop.
NURSE SILVER's eyes are brought back to the crowd as several people separate and move aside for a middle aged woman with greying blonde hair and glasses. She is MRS. FRANCINE SILVER - NURSE SILVER's mother
MRS. SILVER stares at her daughter with sad, disappointed eyes. Her lip quivers and she turns her back away as the two officers step up to either side of NURSE SILVER.
NURSE SILVER feels the coarseness of the noose as it is slipped around her neck and tightened.
She swallows hard, hearing her own heartbeat in her ears - thumping away madly.
NUrse AVA SILVER
(whispering)
"I'm sorry Fivel."
The lever is pulled. The hatch door is dropped.
NURSE SILVER's neck snaps as she drops.
Her glossy eyes stare out in SIR BENEDICT's direction as her face begins to grow purple.
MRS. SILVER doesn't turn around to see her daughter, but instead cries onto a random VILLAGER's shoulder, clutching the cross she wears around her neck.
