A Clue Saga

INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - STUDY - EVENING
SIR BENEDICT BLACK sits in the tall, leather desk chair behind the STUDY's mahogany desk. He is looking over three different versions of Hugh Black's will. MR. REGINALD ASH stands to SIR BENEDICT's right side, hands folded behind his back. Both men are focused entirely on the serious matter before them. SIR BENEDICT's hands twitch and tremble as the anxiety of the unknowable dwells in his mind.
On the other side of the desk, sitting in an armchair, MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK puffs away on a cigar. He is relaxed and casually leaning all of his weight onto the left arm of the armchair.
SIR BENEDICT flips through the three different wills, groaning under his breath while MR. MEADOW-BROOK drones on.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
"... despite your livelihood contesting the right for Hugh to even have had say over the Estate in the first place, we really have no other choice but to go forward with Hugh's will reading."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"But that is unacceptable. I'm alive. It never should have been in his authority in the first place."
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
"The bureaucracy to have you legally declared living could take years in court. Putting yourself in legal limbo at this age in your life is unwise. It won't be resolved quickly and you won't get what you want."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"So what am I looking at, Mr. Meadow-Brook? What do I have to do to keep my great-grand father's legacy?"
2.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
"Hugh's second will... John Boddy. He would be the best assigned executor until everything is sorted out. He is in the family, you can gain his trust, perhaps make a deal with him regarding his own lifestyle and pension if and when things resolve."
SIR BENEDICT looks over at MR. ASH with angry, hopeless eyes.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Is there a Plan B?"
MR. MEADOW-BROOK stands up, beginning to gather the copies of the wills from the surface of the mahogany desk.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
"Short of coercing Hugh's assumed heirs into contesting his claim and forfeiting their inheritance in your favor... no. There is no magical Plan B. And to be perfectly frank with you, I don't think you are going to get anyone to agree to give up their share of the inheritance. I am sorry."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
(dismissing him)
"Thank you, Mr. Meadow-Brook."
MR. MEADOW-BROOK nods with a forced smile.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
"I'll see myself out."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Have a good evening, sir."
MR. MEADOW-BROOK shakes SIR BENEDICT's hand firmly from across the desk. He nods to MR. ASH and closes up his briefcase.
MR. MEADOW-BROOK exits the STUDY.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"What are we going to do, Ash?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Dr. Black kept a little black book. Did the police find it?"
3.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"If they did, we'd all be behind bars or hanging from the gallows."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"We need to find it. And sooner rather than later. We need to create our own Plan B."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"How?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"The information in the book may be enough to control the heirs. It may be the only weapon we have. I'm done being pushed around. It's time we fight back."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Will you stay home tomorrow?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
(shocked)
"You don't want me at the wake?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Everyone in Pratton knows we are going to be at the wake. That's when the reporters, investigators, and nosy housewives will trespass."
MR. ASH nods understandingly.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Yes, of course."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"If you could make use of your time and look for the black book?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"I wouldn't even know where to begin."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Hugh would have either kept it in this room or in his bedroom."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"I'll do my best, sir."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"I know you will, Reggie."
4.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"It's good to be working for you again, Sir Benedict. I have missed you greatly."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Thank you, Ash. You are one of the most loyal men I have had the pleasure of working with. You and Winslow White. I won't soon forget all you've done for us."
MR. ASH smiles politely - all too familiar with empty promises from grateful men in high positions.
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - CONSERVATORY - NIGHT
Moonlight shines through the glass ceiling, illuminating the dark stains between the flagstones. The crime scene clean-up crew did their best, but the stains are still visible, deep within the cracks.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET smokes a cigarette, looking over the stained area. Her eyes are puffy, her lips are dry, and she smells like a walking ashtray.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK enters the CONSERVATORY, yawning.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"There you are. It's getting late. You should get some sleep. It's going to be a long day tomorrow."
MISS SCARLET can't take her eyes off of the floor.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(distantly; trailing off)
"This is where he died..."
MRS. PEACOCK cannot think of a response, so she says nothing. She slowly approaches MISS SCARLET, sliding a comforting hand over her shoulder.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(softly)
"You should really get some rest."
MISS SCARLET brushes MRS. PEACOCK's hand off of her shoulder and walks towards the flower boxes at the edge of the room.
5.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(sarcastically)
"I can take care of my own sleep schedule, Patricia. Thank you."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(voice cracking)
"Vivienne, I am so sorry. I hate that you are going through this and I hate even more that you are going through it alone. I want to make things right by you. I want to help you. Please! Tell me what I can do to help you?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Just leave me alone. I need to be alone."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(beginning to cry)
"Vivienne..."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I want to be alone."
MRS. PEACOCK covers her mouth with her hand to choke out the sound of her own crying and whimpering. She slowly exits the CONSERVATORY, leaving MISS SCARLET alone with her cigarette.
MISS SCARLET stares outside at the moonlight reflecting off of the lake. She notices the briefest flicker of golden light from across the lake. A firefly? Her imaginatio?
EXT. ACROSS THE LAKE - DERELICT CABIN - CONTINUOUS
MISS BRENDA DOVE sits in the dark, on the porch of the run-down CABIN. The golden flame of her lighter extinguishes as her cigarette is lit.
The cherry of the cigarette burns brightly in the otherwise dark, shadowy birch forest.
MISS DOVE exhales the smoke into the air, sighing and laughing to herself.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
(to herself)
"What the fuck was I thinking?"
6.
MAN
"I could ask you the same thing."
MISS DOVE turns around quickly.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD is standing with the SHOTGUN in his hands. There is a small satchel over his right shoulder.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Jesus, Mike. You scared the hell out of me."
COL. MUSTARD holds the shotgun by the front of the barrel and hands it to her.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Here."
MISS DOVE takes the SHOTGUN.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Thank you."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I didn't mean to borrow it for that long, but Mr. Ash was asking about it and I had to give it some busy work."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
(sadly)
"I understand..."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Mrs. White almost caught me. Questioned me about hunting with a shotgun instead of a rifle."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"She's always been a nosy woman. It's going to get her killed."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I brought you something to eat..."
COL. MUSTARD takes the satchel from his shoulder and hands it to her.
MISS DOVE quickly opens the satchel and pulls out a canteen of water. She drinks from it thirstily. She digs deeper into the leather bag and pulls out a sandwich wrapped in paper.
7.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"It's pheasant. I shot it down on my way back to the Grange this morning."
MISS DOVE takes giant mouthfuls of the bread and meat.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
(with her mouth full)
"Is Olivia putting up a fight?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I.. wouldn't know. I haven't been around the police."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
(swallowing)
"It's probably for the best. Don't need them tailing you here."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I'm not going to pretend to understand what you did... and I know I promised not to ask questions."
MISS DOVE stuffs more of the sandwich into her mouth, ignoring the man tip-toeing around his question.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"How much longer are you going to be staying here?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Just until my mother figures out the next step."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"So what am I supposed to do until then? Bring you food in the dark night after night? It's been close to a week, Brenda..."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"That's the deal we made when you found me here. Nothing has changed."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"And while I appreciate you not blowing my head off of my shoulders, I'm having a really hard time understanding..."
8.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
(calmly)
"Michael. I need you to stop asking questions."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Your mother..."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Michael... that sounds a lot like you are about to ask a question."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Do I know her?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Yes, Michael. But if you haven't you figured it out yet, you never will."
COL. MUSTARD narrows his eyes.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"You're a Black, aren't you? That's why there was all that nonsense about you refusing to sleep with Hugh. You two are related. Is he your father? Uncle? Cousin?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
(ignoring his question)
"Do the police have any idea who really killed Hugh yet?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"They haven't got a clue."
MISS DOVE shakes her head in disappointment.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Have a good night, Colonel. I'll see you tomorrow. Let me know how the wake goes. I really wish I could be there to see Hugh in that casket."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I'm sure you aren't the only one."
COL. MUSTARD looks both ways before heading off towards the edge of the LAKE. MISS DOVE watches as COL. MUSTARD follows the shore towards BLACKWELL GRANGE.

INT. FOREST HOME - DEN - CONTINUOUS
COMMISSIONER RANDALL FOREST brings a plate of fish, peas, and macaroni-and-cheese into his unkempt, smelly DEN. He sets the plate down on the paper-strewn side table beside his old, uneven armchair.
COMM. FOREST plops down into the armchair, loosening a few more springs from underneath as he does. He leans on his left hip, stretching an arm behind his chair to switch on the radio.
NEWSCASTER
(on the radio)
"... going into the weekend: we will be seeing a lot of sun. No rain, no storms. A great chance to spend some time outdoors with the family. And now the news: Mayor Pewter has signed off on the construction of the Pratton Community Center. This will include tennis courts, rental ballrooms, spacious gardens and lawns, a proscenium theater with a mezzanine and private boxes, as well as serval units additional available for restaurants or cafeterias or boutiques..."
COMM. FOREST eats his food as he listens.
There is a rapid knock at the door.
COMM. FOREST puts his plate down and stands up with a groan.
He walks to the front door and opens it. No one is there. There is yellow envelope on the welcome mat at his feet.
COMM. FOREST looks around the dark neighborhood and shuts his front door, locking it. He tears open the envelope and pulls out a piece of paper with clipped up letters glued to it.
The letter reads: 'POLICE CORRUPTION WILL NOT GO UNPUNISHED.'
COMM. FOREST drops the blackmail letter on his paper-cluttered side table.
He looks up at the portrait of an old woman with frizzy, gray hair and a dark green blouse.
10.
COMMISSIONER RANDALL FOREST
"Oh, mother. What have I done."
COMM. FOREST speaks to the painting as it the woman is in the room with him, pausing for imaginary responses.
COMMISSIONER RANDALL FOREST
"Well, it wasn't my choice."
(pausing)
"I play both sides to stay safe. I'm going to be fine. I have friends everywhere."
(pausing)
"If Kimberly Mango thinks she can intimidate me with newspaper clippings in the middle of the night, she's even duller than I thought."
(pausing)
"I'm in charge. I'm a big boy, mother. I can make my own decisions."
COMM. FOREST sits back in his armchair and picks up his plate of food. He begins to listen to the radio again.
NEWSCASTER
(on the radio)
"... meanwhile Judge Ruth Mauve has exonerated Patricia Peacock for the suspicion of multiple counts of matricide. The suspicion of the murders of Dr. James Scarlet, Ernest Zaffer, Lord Edwin Spruce, General Gerald Cobalt, and Senator Marcus Peacock have now been turned to Al Brown. Mr. Brown was hiding in plain sight under the alias Alphonse Brunette. Mr. Brown is considered a very dangerous man. Contact your local authorities if you run into this conman..."
INT. MEADOW-BROOK HALL - ATTIC - MIDNIGHT
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK pushes open the ATTIC door and begins to climb the narrow staircase. She is holding a bowl full of ice and a damp washrag. She is wearing a long white nightgown and turquoise slippers. Once she reaches the top of the ATTIC stairs, she sees MERCY sleeping on her mattress. A pig-like snort comes through the deformed girl’s nostrils.
MERCY wakes up as the floorboards creak under JESSICA's feet.
11.

JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"I brought you some ice."
JESSICA slides the bowl over to her sister. There is a small distance JESSICA leaves between herself and her sister.
MERCY takes the damp rag and wipes at the welts from the bamboo cane.
MERCY MEADOW-BROOK
"Thank you."
JESSICA nods, biting her lip as she watches MERCY rub melting ice cubes around on her wounded flesh. JESSICA's eyes trail to the crude doll resting on the floor beside the mattress.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"Do you need anything else?"
MERCY MEADOW-BROOK
"Is father home yet?"
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
(sighing)
"No. Not yet."
MERCY MEADOW-BROOK
"He never comes to see me."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"He never has time for any of us any more."
JESSICA watches her sister tend to her wounds as sadness and anger rush through her head.
MERCY begins to suck on the ice cubes.
JESSICA looks around the ATTIC and is quickly overwhelmed with the depression that clings to every surface. She watches a single spider twirling in it’s web in the corner.
JESSICA becomes itchy and uncomfortable as the long spindly legs of the spider carry it quickly from it's web to a dark corner of the unknown.

JESSICA turns away from her sister and heads back towards the staircase.
12.
MERCY begins to panic as her sister leaves her alone in the dark.
MERCY MEADOW-BROOK
"Where are you going?"
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"I have to go to bed."
MERCY becomes angry at her sisters extremely brief visit.
MERCY MEADOW-BROOK
"Don't go!"
MERCY toss the bowl of ice in JESSICA's direction. The glass bowl shatters, spilling the ice across the dusty, dirty boards of the ATTIC's floor.
JESSICA hurries down the stairs as she hears the trashing of MERCY's ankle chain against the wooden floorboards.
Tears begin to fall from her cheeks as JESSICA hurries away from the ATTIC and her imprisoned sister.
MERCY MEADOW-BROOK
(screaming)
"Don't go!"
INT. MEADOW-BROOK HALL - UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS
JESSICA shuts the narrow ATTIC door behind her, turns to cross the upstairs hallway, and rushes to her bedroom door...
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK exits the MASTER BEDROOM and turns on the upstairs hallway light. JESSICA is caught at her doorway as the brightness pierces the night.
MRS. MEADOW-BROOK is fully dressed in high heels and a pant-suit, despite it being midnight. She is visibly drunk - the sticky remnants of gin sits in the corners of her mouth.
MRS. JANE MEADow-BROOK
"What were you doing up in the attic, Jessica?"
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"I was just giving her some ice."
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
(annoyed)
"You gave her ice?"
13.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
(defensively)
"You beat her!"
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
(shouting)
"Mrs. Canary heard her making a fuss! What if Mrs. Canary was woken up and heard her just now? You know that you can't get her excited! She's too loud and uncontrollable! You know better than that, Jessica!"
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK steps out into the hallway angry, sleepy, and rubbing his eyes. His tattoo is visible on he right bicep due to the cut-off tee-shirt he is wearing. MRS. MEADOW-BROOK glares at the tattoo, grinding her teeth.
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"What the hell is going on out here? I'm trying to sleep!"
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
"Malcolm, go back to your room!"
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"No! This is getting out of hand! I want to talk to dad."
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
"Your father isn't home yet."
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"It is after midnight! Where is the hell is he?"
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
(shouting firmly)
"Malcolm, I said go back to your room!"
JESSICA crosses her arms, worked up and near tears.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"Stop yelling at everyone! Just stop..."
JESSICA enters her bedroom, slamming the door and locking it.
14.
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
(spitefully)
"When you and dad finally get a divorce, we're staying with him. You get to keep your monster... but you're gonna have to find a new attic."
MRS. MEADOW-BROOK smacks MALCOLM across the face with the back of her hand. Her wedding ring scratches his cheek.
MALCOLM stares back at her with hate in his eyes as blood trickles down his cheek. He calmly wipes it off with his hand and spits directly into her face.
MRS. MEADOW-BROOK grabs him by the collar of the shirt and firmly presses the heel of her shoe into his bare toe.
MALCOLM screams in pain.
MRS. MEADOW-BROOK releases him, forcefully shoving him against the wall.
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
(calmly)
"Go back to your room."
MALCOLM limps off to his bedroom door, slamming it and locking it behind him.
MRS. MEADOW-BROOK hears the sound of MALCOLM's dresser scooting in front of the door to block it from the inside.
INT. MR. MEADOW-BROOK's CAR - CONTINUOUS
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK is in the back seat with his pants around his ankles. He is thrusting sloppily into MISS BECCA DIAMOND.
MISS BECCA DIAMOND
(groaning)
"Come on, baby. Can't take all year..."
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
(panting)
"Just stop talking. I don't pay you to talk..."
The windows are fogged up and the vehicle is rocking back and forth.
15.
EXT. MR. MEADOW-BROOK's car - conTINUOUS
MRS. HENRIETTA CANARY walks past the rocking car. She is walking her two Pomeranians.
She clucks in disgust, slowing down a bit to try and see who is underneath MR. MEADOW-BROOK through the foggy glass. She can't make out who it is.
MRS. CANARY continues walking past the COMMUNITY GARDENS and MEADOW-BROOK HALL.
INT. SILVER HOME - MIDNIGHT
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER slowly opens the door to FIVEL's BEDROOM. She sees the boy awake - sitting in his window seat. His eyes are set in the direction of the small mountain where BLACKWELL GRANGE rests upon.
MRS. FrANCINE SILVER
"You should get some sleep. It's nearly one o'clock in the morning."
FIVEL DOVE
"I don't want to stay in Pratton anymore..."
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"That's nonsense. You've no where else to live but with me. I'm your grandmother and I'm going to take care of you for the rest of you life."
FIVEL DOVE
"But I don't want to be here... I'd rather take my chances and start over somewhere else. I hate this town... these people..."
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. Proverbs 10:12."
FIVEL DOVE
(shutting his eyes)
"This isn't the life I want.
16.
FIVEL DOVE (CONT'D)
I can't live like this. I'm miserable."
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"You... you are truly this unhappy with your life?"
FIVEL DOVE
(sighing in exhaustion)
"Yes."
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"Then we'll go over to the church and talk to the new reverend first thing in the morning. He will guide you onto the path to true happiness."
FIVEL shuts his eyes even tighter, gripping his head with frustration.
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"The Lord will heal your weary soul. Give your burdens to him. He will carry them for you. We are the ones who win in the end."
FIVEL DOVE
(annoyed)
"I just want to be alone..."
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"You don't have to be alone. Not any more."
FIVEL DOVE
"But that's what I want..."
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"I don't think you know what you want. Being alone is true misery. Finding God was the best thing to happen to me. It meant that I was never truly alone anymore. And now He has answered my prayers further. You are here with me now."
FIVEL opens his eyes, continuing to stare out the window towards BLACKWELL GRANGE.
FIVEL DOVE
"I'm feeling sleepy. I think I'm going to sleep."
17.
MRS. SILVER smiles.
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"I'll leave the door open if you need me."
FIVEL DOVE
"You don't have to..."
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"A closed door is an invitation for the Devil. Good night, Fivel."
MRS. SIILVER leaves the door open as and watches FIVEL get into bed from the hallway.
FIVEL lays awake in bed, pulling the covers over his face.
MRS. FRANCINE SILVER
"Don't forget to say your prayers before you fall asleep."
FIVEL shuts his eyes tightly as tears fall onto his pillow.
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - CONSERVATORY - CONTINUOUS
MISS SCARLET is still smoking through her pack of cigarettes. She stares out the windows with sad, tired eyes. She doses off and drops the cigarette onto the flagstone floor. She quickly jolts awake and picks the cigarette back up. She takes a long, hard drag - exhaling smoke into the hazy glass dome of above her.
MISS SCARLET notices COL. MUSTARD slowly becoming visible near the edge of the BOAT HOUSE by the lake.
MISS SCARLET goes to the side door and unlocks it and opens it for him.
COL. MUSTARD looks up, surprised to see her. He quickly paces to the side door and enters the manor.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"'Preciate it. I would've had to walk around to the front."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"You can't sleep either?"
18.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(sighing)
"I never can lately. I always find myself wandering the grounds."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"It's quiet out there. I like it."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"It's going to be a rough day tomorrow. Shall we have a nightcap and call it a day?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"That actually sounds wonderful."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Right-O! Let's go to the billiard room."
MISS SCARLET puts out the butt of her cigarette into the flowerbox.
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - BILLIARD ROOM - CONTINUOUS
MISS SCARLET and COL. MUSTARD enter the room to see MADAME ROSE BLACK sitting on the floor with a single candle lit around twelve tarot cards.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Are we interrupting something?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"We'll just grab a bottle and be out of your hair."
MME ROSE holds up her right hand.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I'm looking at the next twelve months ahead for us."
COL. MUSTARD browses the liquor shelf before selecting a whiskey bottle.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Do we want to know what the next twelve months have in store?"
19.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(with sad eyes)
"No. I don't think you do."
MME ROSE blows out the candle and begins to put the cards away.
COL. MUSTARD holds up the bottle towards MISS SCARLET. She nods in approval.
MME ROSE stacks the cards loudly against the side of the pool table. She sighs deeply, discontent, and bothered.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(slightly concerned)
"Are you good, Rose?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(tensing up)
"I'm not going to be attending the wake or the funeral. I thought you should know."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Why not?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"Mr. Ash brought it to my attention that Blackwell Grange should not be left empty on a day that everyone knows we'll be at the funeral home."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Isn't Rusty going to stay on the grounds? I'm sure he and Ash have it covered. In fact, I could leave early and join him. I miss talking with the old bastard. Besides, you should not miss your brothers funeral."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I won't be attending, Colonel. My place is here tomorrow. You cannot change my mind."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(shrugging)
"I suppose that is your choice."
(holding up the bottle)
"Vivienne, I'll be in the lounge."
20.
COL. MUSTARD exits the BILLIARD ROOM, leaving MISS SCARLET and MME ROSE alone together.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"There is something on your mind, child."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"My mother and Margaret..."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(hushing her)
"Tonight is not the night to speak of Margaret. Another day, my dear."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(blushing)
"I'm sorry. I ask too often..."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"It's not that... I mean, yes, you do ask often... but it's something else."
MISS SCARLET notices MME ROSE's tight grip on the tarot cards. She glances out to the HALL behind her.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(hesitantly)
"I really should be joining Colonel Mustard."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(shrugging)
"Enjoy your nightcap, Miss Scarlet. I take it you and your stepmother will be leaving after the will reading?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"We were going to stay through the garden party."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(sternly)
"I don't think that would be wise. You'll leave after the will reading."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Well, it just feels too soon. And we don't have everything back in Washington D.C. fully..."
21.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"Vivienne, I knew it was a bad idea for you and Edward to come here and now he is gone. You need to leave this place before the garden party."
MISS SCARLET's face twists in a sour expression.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"You thought it was a bad idea for me and Edward to be here? Why didn't you reach out to him or me or anyone? If you knew what was going to happen..."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"Some things can't be controlled. It would have fallen on deaf ears."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"After the train ride we had together, I'm not so sure that's true."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I tried to warn people for years..."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"You could have told me in the lounge when I first met you! I wanted to leave Blackwell Grange as soon as it felt strange on that night. I couldn't find Edward! Had you warned me... I never would have let him leave me side."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I'm warning you now, my dear."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"You don't get to do that. Manipulate me... use Edward and these hindsight prophecies..."
MISS SCARLET turns away from MME ROSE, slamming the BILLIARD ROOM loudly behind her as she exits the room.
MME ROSE sigh deeply.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(to the closed door)
"That's right, my dear.

22.
MADAME ROSE BLACK (CONT'D)
Get mad about this. Get mad at someone other than yourself and your stepmother..."
