A Clue Saga

INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - MEN'S BATHROOM - NOON
DR. WALTER RAVEN splashes water onto his face from the running faucet. His collar and bowtie become profusely soaked in the process. He sighs deeply, looking at his reflection in the mirror.
DR. WALTER RAVEN
(sorrowfully)
"I am dead inside..."
He listens as somber pipe organ music slowly begins to play from a nearby room.
FLASHBACK
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - HALL - MIDNIGHT
DR. RAVEN struggles as he drags HUGH BLACK's dead body, by the feet, across the HALL, from the BILLIARD ROOM door.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID scares him as she taps on his shoulder.
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"What the fuck?"
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"Help me with him."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Are you serious?"
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"Just help me get him back in the cellar before someone else comes out here."
DR. ORCHID motions for him to move aside. She proceeds to drag HUGH BLACK's body quickly across the HALL to the top of the CELLAR STAIRS. DR. RAVEN pulls open the door for her.
DR. ORCHID forcefully shoves HUGH BLACK down into the darkness. The sickening sound of bones cracking and joints popping out of socket reach DR. RAVEN's ears.
DR. RAVEN stares down the staircase - his eyes fixed on the mangled corpse of his daughter's ex-husband.

INT. St. anthony's mortuary - lobby - continous
SIR BENEDICT BLACK sits in his wheelchair. MRS. BLANCHE WHITE stands behind him. The two of them greet the mourners as they enter the funeral home.
An tall, quiet-spoken woman hurries from VISITATION ROOM #1 and comes to MRS. WHITE's shoulder. She is MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY, the mortician, and older sister of Police Secretary: ANGIE ECRU.
MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY
(whispering)
"I just wanted to let you know, Reverend Green has just arrived."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(eyes widening)
"What?"
MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY
"He just made his way into the Hugh's visitation room."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(shocked)
"Hosea's back in town?"
MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY
"Yes, Reverend Sycamore is sadly no longer with us. He retired last month."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I just wasn't aware Hosea was back in town."
MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY
(unsure of what to say)
"Well... he's here."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Yes, thank you, Mrs. Slate-Grey."
SIR BENEDICT greets an older couple as they enter. MRS. WHITE offers a polite smile and head bow.
MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY
"If you need anything, I'll be around."
3.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Thank you, dearie."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
(quietly)
"What was that about? Is her husband not able to show up?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I didn't ask about Graham. No, it's not that..."
(pausing)
"Reverend Green is back in town. And he is doing the funeral."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
(shutting his eyes)
"Jesus Christ on a bicycle..."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Do you think he's the one who bailed Thallo out?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"I don't think that's important right now."
SIR BENEDICT stands up as he greets an elderly gentlemen - shaking his hand.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Howard! You are still alive."
HOWARD
(disgruntled)
"Maybe I'll be lucky enough to come back from the dead one day like you did."
The old man hobbles off into the VISITATION ROOM, leaving SIR BENEDICT standing before his wheelchair. He slowly sits back down.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"There will be plenty of those comments. Best we get used to them."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"You still carry that flask of gin everywhere?"
MRS. WHITE reaches into her purse and hands it to him.
4.
INt. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - Lounge - contiNUOUS
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK and COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD share their stolen bottle of bourbon from BLACKWELL GRANGE. They are both slurring heavily.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"God, I can't imagine what Benedict must be feeling. I never had the courage to greet people at any of my husband's funerals."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Let's keep that chatter down to a whisper, eh?"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Have you seen him yet?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(defensively)
"Him? Who?"
COL. MUSTARD looks around the room - quickly clocking everyone's faces.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I'm talking about Hugh. Have you been in to see him?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Not yet."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Neither have I. I've been dreading it."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"It's hard to believe he's really gone. It seems like just yesterday we were children, playing in the water..."
FLASHBACK
Ext. Blackwell grange - boat house - dusk
Twelve-year-old MICHAEL MUSTARD is knee deep in the muddy water of the LAKE behind BLACKWELL GRANGE. Eight-year-old HUGH BLACK is ankle deep, scooping up water with a small metal pail.
5.
YOUNG MICHAEL
(holding out his hands)
"Don't you dare!"
YOUNG HUGH flings the water at YOUNG MICHAEL, soaking him from the chest down.
YOUNG HUGH runs off out of the lake and back towards the TERRACE.
YOUNG HUGH
(taunting)
"You can't catch me!"
YOUNG MICHAEL
(chasing after him)
"Get back here!"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK steps out of the CONSERVATORY's back door with a stern, serious look on his face. He motions for the boys to come over to him.
YOUNG HUGH
"We were only playing."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
(sternly)
"Hugh, get yourself cleaned up. I need to talk to Michael alone."
YOUNG HUGH hangs his head sadly as he walks into the CONSERVATORY, leaving muddy footprints behind him.
YOUNG MICHAEL
"We were just playing, sir. I didn't mean to cause a mess."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"The maids will clean it. I don't care about that."
YOUNG MICHAEL
"What is it?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Sit down."
SIR BENEDICT motions to the concrete benches near the TENNIS COURTS. YOUNG MICHAEL's eyes fall on the letter in SIR BENEDICT's hands. He can see the emblem of his father's battalion.
6.
YOUNG MICHAEL
(excitedly)
"Did you hear from my father? Is he coming home soon?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"My boy."
(pausing)
"Your father passed away last week. We just received the news today. I am sorry, Michael."
YOUNG MICHAEL'S eyes immediately fill with tears as goosebumps crawl over his entire body. The ringing in his ears begins to deafen out the summer noises around him.
YOUNG MICHAEL
"No... that's not right. That's can't be right."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"I am so, so sorry, Michael."
YOUNG MICHAEL
"No, you're wrong! You have to be wrong."
SIR BENEDICT stands up as YOUNG MICHAEL starts pushing him, striking him on the chest. The young boy screams in anguish.
SIR BENEDICT grabs YOUNG MICHAEL firmly by the shoulders and forces him to stand still.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
(gripping him tightly)
"Stop it. Michael!"
YOUNG MICHAEL
"You're wrong. He's not dead. He can't be dead. He said he was coming back for me."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
(firmly)
"Michael! Enough! You will handle this like a man. Heroically. Like your father."
SIR BENEDICT releases his grip on YOUNG MICHAEL. The boy takes serval steps away and looks up at the sky. He follows a small flock of birds as they cross the lake to the forest beyond.
7.
YOUNG MICHAEL
(trying to calm down)
"He died a hero? His death had meaning!"
SIR BENEDICT closes his eyes for a moment.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Your father died honorably - defending his unit. History will never forget General Martin Mustard. His last wishes were that you follow in his footsteps and go to military school."
YOUNG MICHAEL
"He wanted that?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"I can make it happen, whenever you are ready to grow up and start feeling closer to him."
YOUNG MICHAEL closes his eyes, squeezing out a tear.
YOUNG MICHAEL
"I'm ready now."
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
(smirking)
"I'll go make some calls."
(pausing)
"Michael. I'm proud of you. And your father is too."
YOUNG MICHAEL nods with a tight, stiff lip.
END OF FLASHBACK
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"... and as you know - my father killed himself. They lied to me for years. Got rid of me by sending me off to military school. In truth, my father died a coward, scared of fighting. He never would have wanted me to go down that same dark path. But I did and I hated every second of it. But it was the only thing I had to do. It was the only thing that kept me from drinking or sleeping myself to death. It was the only way I could feel my father again. And now I'm an empty husk."
8.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(wiping her eyes)
"Mike..."
COL. MUSTARD hides the tears resurfacing in his eyes by taking out his monocle and wiping his face quickly with his sleeve.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I guess sometimes my tender side comes out without the moonshine."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"You don't have to suffer in silence. What they did to you was wrong. The lie they told you was wrong. It sent you somewhere you never should have been."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I always wondered who I would have been if I never enlisted. I imaged I'd be long dead or behind bars by now."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Why do you say that?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"If I wasn't oversees the day that I learned what happened to my father - I would have murdered Benedict Black. Maybe he would have gotten the upper hand and murdered me first. But I would have fought till the last drop of blood was gone. I'd do anything to watch that man suffer."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"You don't mean that do you?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I've fantasized about doing it a hundred times. Having him face the wall as I swing a baseball bat, shooting him right between the eyes, drowning him in the lake where my childhood ended, burning down Blackwell Grange with him inside... I've thought of every possibility, Patricia."
9.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"He's an old man. He's already suffering for everything he has done. He probably doesn't have much time left, anyway."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"If you are telling me I should let bygones be bygones and keep my distance, then you can hand that bottle over and enjoy the funeral on your own."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I'm just saying - sometimes it's not worth it. Trust me."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Patricia, my entire life was wasted because of that man. If I want to watch the life fade out of his eyes while I strangle him with a chain, I am more than entitled to do that."
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - VISITATION ROOM #2 - CONTINUOUS
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET sits alone in the small visitation room. EDWARD CLAY's cheap pine casket rests at the head of the room. The casket lid is closed and three small bouquets are laid neatly nearby.
MISS SCARLET watches as a man passes the doorway. She blinks slowly, letting out more tear from her puffy, red eyes.
No one has stopped by to pay their respects. She is alone - and has been since she arrived.
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - VISITATION ROOM #1 - coNTINUOUS
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY stands at HUGH BLACK's fancy, copper casket. He is looking down upon the cold, waxy face of his biological father. The injuries HUGH BLACK sustained at death have been covered, cleaned, and fixed. It is as if MRS. SLATE-GREY turned back time and restored HUGH BLACK to the handsome, silver-fox everyone knew him to be. Even in death the corner of his mouth is upturned in a cocky smirk.
10.
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
(whispering)
"Hi, dad."
Presently, the doors to VISITATION ROOM #1 open loudly. SGT. GRAY turns around - his face drops and his heartbeat picks up as he recognizes the trio entering..
They are - LORD ALFRED GRAY, his adoptive-father, LADY FLORENCE GRAY, adoptive-his mother; MRS. WHITE's younger sister, and MISS ADELAIDE GRAY, his adoptive-younger sister. Their faces are bitter. They all speak in British accents.
‌Sergeant BENJAMIN GRAY
(gulping)
"Father, you're here."
LORD GRAY walks over to SGT. GRAY and HUGH BLACK's casket. LADY GRAY and MISS GRAY sit down in the chairs of the front row. They are watching LORD GRAY and SGT. GRAY very closely.
LORD ALFRED GRAY
(angrily)
"Hugh Black is murdered in cold blood and I have to hear about it from the family butler?"
‌SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"I'm sorry, I've had a lot going on."
LORD ALFRED GRAY
(offended)
"You're too busy with this police work. I think it's time to put that to bed. It's time you home back to Timberwolf Commons. It has been too long since you've been home. Greyscale Close needs your... presence."
‌SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"You sent me away when I was twenty. You told me to make something of myself. I have. I'm a police officer."
LORD GRAY cackles, looking over to his wife and daughter for their own agreeing looks of scorn and amusement over SGT. GRAY's statement.
11.
LORD ALFRED GRAY
"You have spent the past fourteen years of rescuing kittens from trees and handling burglaries. It's over. It has run it's course. You are finished with this! I need you back home. I am tired of having the Gray's name run through the mud. My grandfather was Earl of Greyscale, my father was Chief Inspector, I am a noble Lord, there is no reason to pattern back to police work. No reason at all."
‌SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
(hesitantly)
"I'm not sure that is what I need right now..."
LORD ALFRED GRAY
(sternly)
"I am sure enough for the both of us."
(pausing)
"Now, come talk with your mother and sister. They haven't seen you in years."
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - MEN'S BATHROOm - conTINUOUS
MASTER JOHN BODDY stands at a urinal, unzipping the fly of his pants. His shy bladder prevents him from relieving himself - as there is a MAN washing his hands at the sink.
Finally, the man leaves. MASTER BODDY rolls his eyes, muttering something to himself about privacy. It is short lived, however, as MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK almost immediately enters behind the other MAN.
MR. MEADOW-BROOK walks up to the urinal beside MASTER BODDY and immediately begins to pee.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
(while peeing)
"You talked to your grandfather yet?"
MASTER BODDY tries to ignore the fact that MR. MEADOW-BROOK is talking to him from the neighboring urinal.
12.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
(continuing to pee)
"You could be the richest boy in Pratton if you make the right choices."
MASter john boddy
(annoyed)
"I haven't talked to him yet."
MR. MEADOW-BROOK zips up his pants.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
"Well, we need to figure out the will reading, so you might want to talk to him soon. It's all legal work. You don't have to like the man."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(ending the conversation)
"Okay, thank you."
MR. MEADOW-BROOK notices the lack of noise in the otherwise silent BATHROOM.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
(laughing)
"Jesus, you wouldn't last a day in boot camp."
MR. MEADOW-BROOK leaves the BATHROOM without washing his hands.
MASTER BODDY quickly urinates, sighing deeply.
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - LOUNGE - conTINUOUS
MRS. WHITE enters the room, spotting COL. MUSTARD and MRS. PEACOCK on the sofa in the back. COL. MUSTARD is drinking from the bourbon bottle. MRS. WHITE hurries quickly over to them, fidgeting with her purse strings. MRS. PEACOCK sits forward in her seat and nudges COL. MUSTARD to pay attention to the distraught woman.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Reverend Green is here."
13.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(laughing)
"What a treat! I'll have to invite him back to the Grange for moonshine."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(pissed off)
"I'm glad you are enjoying this. That man knows too much about our pasts. I don't want him in our town. I don't want him at our church!"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I'm not worried about Reverend Green. I'm not a little boy."
MRS. WHITE clucks in disgust at his humor as COL. MUSTARD drinks directly from the bourbon bottle again.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Well, maybe you should be worried that my sister just arrived. And she brought her husband with her."
COL. MUSTARD chokes on the bourbon, spitting it over himself and the coffee table in front of him. He proceeds to cough and cough. MRS. PEACOCK claps her hands together with a laugh.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(gleefully)
"Well, now it all makes perfect sense. You've been worried about Lord Gray showing up."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(catching his breath)
"Fuck!"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(sarcastically)
"Yes, Colonel. Fuck."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I suppose Reverend Green should be the least of both of our worries at this point. Has Ben talked to Lord Gray yet?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Benedict or Benjamin?"
14.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(rolling his eyes)
"Fuck Benedict. I'm talking about your son."
MRS. WHITE narrows her eyes.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"I don't know. Probably."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"You may want to monitor his conversations. If he tells his father he knows the truth..."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(butting in)
"I know this is none of my business..."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(cutting her off)
"You're right. It isn't"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Perhaps, you should tell Lord Gray that Benjamin knows the truth yourself, Mrs. White. That way it takes the pressure away from Benjamin."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(appalled)
"What? No!"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"It was just a suggestion."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Lord Gray should never be told. Keep it behind his back. Forever."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"That can only go on for so long. It is going to come out sooner or later."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Secrets always do."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"If anyone breaks the news to Lord Gray we are in for hell. He is the epitome of a control-freak."
15.
MRS. PEACOCK rolls her eyes.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"If the sun suddenly stops rising and setting when he says it should, he will split open, and Satan himself will dance out."
COL. MUSTARD offers the bourbon bottle to MRS. WHITE. MRS. WHITE takes it and swallows a great deal as if it as easily as if she were drinking milk.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(clearing her throat)
"I suppose I should go back to Benedict before the Mayor and his wife arrive."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(laughing in delight)
"I forgot about that short little bastard! He grabbed my ass back when I was with Hugh. Hugh broke his nose in the ballroom."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(laughing heartily)
"He's got a new wife? What young, tight, thing is Max married to now?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(also laughing)
"Some plastic whore with a brain the size of a walnut."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Well, good for him."
COL. MUSTARD wipes his eyes from the tears of laughter.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"This cheered me up."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(whispering)
"Wait until you see her cheekbones."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(snorting)
"How much plastic are we talking?"
16.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(continuing to laugh)
"You'll have to meet her yourself. Her lips don't close fully. You always see teeth and gums. She can't say popcorn."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Mrs. White, you're terrible! You were a bully in school, no doubt!"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"No, no! I've become a cynical bitch in my old age. I used to be fun and sweet. Your stepdaughter reminds me of myself when I was her age."
MRS. PEACOCK smiles sweetly.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"You'll have to dig out some old pictures. I'm sure you were the sexiest lady in Blackwell Grange."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(blushing with a smile)
"Why, thank you! I was a blonde."
(primping her gray hair)
"We do have more fun, as they say."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I'm sure Hugh was smitten."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Yes, well..."
MRS. PEACOCK stands up from the sofa and approaches MRS. WHITE.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"We are sisters, you and me. In a way."
MRS. WHITE takes another long sip off of the bourbon, before handing it over to MRS. PEACOCK.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"He was a good man in his youth. An ardent lover."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(whispering)
"He had a great big dick, too."
17.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(lowering her eyes)
"If we're being crass, one might point out his obsession with legs and nylons."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(remembering fondly)
"I would have bruises and bites marks on my thighs."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(nodding knowingly)
"He was a rabid animal. I miss him."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
(tearing up)
"I do too."
MRS. WHITE turns to exit the room as the effects of the bourbon are felt through her bones and thoughts.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(muttering to herself)
"Oh, Winslow..."
FLASHBACK
Int. BlackweLL GRANGE - kitchen - morning
YOUNG BLANCHE WHITE stands at the kitchen sink washing a set of wine glasses. She sets one down to dry as she notices a man's hand picking up the glass and a towel. YOUNG HUGH BLACK begins to dry the wine glass.
YOUNG BLANCHE
"You don't have to do that, Master Black."
YOUNG HUGH
(shrugging)
"I wanted to try the bottle of 1822 that Margaret was going on and on about."
YOUNG BLANCHE
"Here."
YOUNG BLANCHE hands him a different wine glass that she has just finished washing.
18.
YOUNG HUGH
"What's wrong with this one?"
YOUNG BLANCHE
"The one you have is chipped."
YOUNG HUGH looks at the rim of the wine glass and sees a small nick in the surface. He takes both wine glasses and sets them down on the table. He opens the ice box door and takes the opened bottle of wine. He pours both glasses of wine and hands one to YOUNG BLANCHE. He holds the chipped glass.
YOUNG HUGH
"Imperfections do not bother me."
YOUNG BLANCHE looks down at the wine glass, shaking her head, refusing the wine.
YOUNG BLANCHE
"My husband will be back from Sun Haven with your father before dinner. He doesn't like it when I drink."
YOUNG HUGH
"I like it when you drink."
YOUNG BLANCHE looks down at the wine and brings it to her lips. She takes a small sip.
YOUNG BLANCHE
"It's delicious."
YOUNG HUGH
"Have you ever had something more sweet?"
YOUNG HUGH brings his cup to his lips and drinks a great deal.
YOUNG BLANCHE
"Only a sip. I need to start setting the table for dinner."
YOUNG HUGH
"Why are you with a man that controls what you desire?"
YOUNG BLANCHE
(taken aback)
"What?"
19.
YOUNG HUGH
"You want to drink nice wine, like I have offered you."
YOUNG BLANCHE
(thinking)
"Well..."
YOUNG HUGH
(continuing on)
"What if I was to go into the pantry and bring out some cheese, too? Would Winslow be upset then?"
YOUNG BLANCHE
"I don't think he'd be upset over cheese."
YOUNG HUGH
"Then why let him dictate your happiness. You were a nurse. You could be a doctor now if he didn't hold you back here in the kitchens."
YOUNG BLANCHE
"It was your father's idea to hire me on. Winslow was just his chauffeur."
YOUNG HUGH
"No. Winslow didn't like you working at the hospital away from him. He wanted you close so he could know who you talked to and who you spent time with."
YOUNG BLANCHE
"What?"
YOUNG HUGH
"Blanche, he clipped your wings and now you cannot fly."
YOUNG BLANCHE grabs the glass of wine and drinks the entirety of it.
YOUNG BLANCHE
"He always tells me what books to read. He won't let me read anything fiction because it puts silly ideas into our heads."
20.
YOUNG HUGH
"Is that why I've caught you in the library?"
YOUNG BLANCHE
(blushing)
"I... I don't know what you're talking about."
YOUNG HUGH
"Dusting the pages of the romance novels. Chapter by chapter."
YOUNG BLANCHE
"You saw me reading?"
YOUNG HUGH
"Sometimes I would find the book your were reading and read it myself to see what your were in store for."
YOUNG BLANCHE
(smiling)
"They were mostly silly stories."
YOUNG HUGH
"I don't think they're silly. I think they are sweet."
YOUNG HUGH and YOUNG BLANCHE begin to move closer to each other.
YOUNG BLANCHE
"My favorite one was about the stable girl and the prince."
YOUNG HUGH
"Reminds me of a real life story about a kitchen maid and a millionaire."
YOUNG HUGH reaches for her hand, entwining his fingers around hers.
YOUNG BLANCHE smiles as she wraps her fingers around his.
END OF FLASHBACK
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - VISITATION ROOM #1 - AFTERNOON
REVEREND HOSEA GREEN stands in front of HUGH BLACK's casket at the podium. He is reading from the Bible.
21.
REVEREND HOSEA GREEN
(reading)
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
MRS. PEACOCK and MRS. WHITE hold hands and lowers their heads as REV. GREEN speaks. MRS. WHITE keeps one eye open and on the reverend.
SIR BENEDICT and LORD GRAY sit together, both listening intently to REV. GREEN. LORD GRAY places a supportive hand on SIR BENEDICT's knee and gives him a nod.
COL. MUSTARD and SGT. GRAY sit together, silent, with their bodies turned slightly away from one another.
MR. MEADOW-BROOK sits in the row behind MASTER BODDY, tapping him on the shoulder and motioning for SIR BENEDICT. MR. MEADOW-BROOK points to his watch, impatiently.
REVEREND HOSEA GREEN
"We cannot let ourselves be burdened with questions that have no answers. God will provide the police the ample clues to find out who ended Hugh Black's life."
DR. RAVEN's eye flicks as he tries to sit still in his seat.
REVEREND HOSEA GREEN
"Let us not discuss it any further. May we all let Hugh Black rest in peace. A son, a brother, a lover..."
The doors open loudly, interrupting REV. GREEN's eulogy.
22.
A young red-haired woman in her early twenties enters VISITATION ROOM #1. All eyes are turned to her.
WOMAN
"Hi, I'm sorry to interrupt. My train was late and I couldn't find the funeral home. I thought it was being held at the church but the doors were locked."
The WOMAN clumsily slides into a row of chairs, bumping into knees and feet as she excuses herself.
REVEREND HOSEA GREEN
"Who are you?"
WOMAN
"I'm Amelia Peach. Hugh Black and Patricia Peacock's long-lost baby girl."
