A Clue Saga

INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - VISITATION ROOM #1 - AFTERNOON
All eyes in the room fall on MISS AMELIA PEACH. She waves at the entire room as a whole. She is visibly nervous yet she maintains a bright, optimistic grin on her face.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK begins to stand up, but MRS. BLANCHE WHITE tugs on her hand tightly, securing her in her seat. MRS. WHITE shakes her head 'no'. MRS. PEACOCK glares at MRS. WHITE in offense and roughly pulls her hand away.
REVEREND HOSEA GREEN stares at MISS PEACH with baffled eyes. MISS PEACH looks at REV. GREEN, hoping he will be the next to speak and rescue them from the tension and silence.
REVEREND HOSEA GREEN
(continuing the eulogy)
"May we all let Hugh Black rest in peace. A son, a brother, a lover, and... a father."
The roomful of mourners begin to murmur about MISS PEACH. They are not discreet, nor do they hide the fact they are all staring at her like a grand Christmas Tree in a lavish foyer.
2.
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY stares at MISS PEACH from COL. MUSTARD's side. COL. MUSTARD notices SGT. GRAY's attention to MISS PEACH and gives a nodding glance to REV. GREEN. SGT. GRAY looks at MISS PEACH with curiosity and loneliness.
LORD ALFRED GRAY and LADY FLORENCE GRAY notice SGT. GRAY staring at MISS PEACH. LORD GRAY bites his lip, grunting audibly through his nostrils. LADY GRAY's lips twist into a frown as she looks around the room to make sure that everyone else is as appalled and shocked as she is. MISS GRAY is obviously bored and uninterested in everything that is happening around her.‌
MRS. PEACOCK stands up in her seat and begins to move towards MISS PEACH‌
MISS AMELIA PEACH
(rushing over)
"Mamma?"
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"Yes, darling. I'm here."
MRS. PEACOCK reaches MISS PEACH and wraps her arms around her tightly. Tears begin to pour down MRS. PEACOCK's cheeks.
MRS. WHITE looks down at the floor as she feels the red-hot flames of jealousy burn away at her cheeks and temples.
COL. MUSTARD notices MRS. WHITE's shift of attitude and pats SGT. GRAY on the shoulder dismissively as he crosses the room to MRS. WHITE.
3.
SGT. GRAY watches as COL. MUSTARD helps MRS. WHITE to her feet and leads her out of the room.
RUSTY and SIR BENEDICT begin to talk quietly together.
MR. RUSTY NAYLOR
"Did you know about this?"
SIR BENEDICT places a finger to his lips, hushing the gardener.
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Oh, yes."
MR. RUSTY NAYLOR
(appalled)
"My god... You kept a mother and her child apart?"
SIR BENEDICT BLACK
"Go back to Blackwell Grange. We'll discuss this later."
RUSTY stands up and exits out the same door COL. MUSTARD and MRS. WHITE have just left through.
MRS. PEACOCK and MISS PEACH are still embracing tightly in front of the entire wake.
SIR BENEDICT takes notice and begins a slow clap, which picks up as everyone else begins to congratulation the unexpected happy reunion.
MASTER BODDY stares at his grandfather with angry, confused eyes. MR. MEADOW-BROOK taps on MASTER BODDY's shoulder.
4.
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
"On second thought, hold off that conversation with your grandfather. I need to talk to him first."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
(confused)
"What is happening?"
MR. MILES MEADOW-BROOK
"Someone has just taken a shit in the scrambled eggs, Johnny."
INT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - HALL - CONTINUOUS
MR. REGINALD ASH closes the LOUNGE doors as he spots MADAME ROSE BLACK at the top of the stairs. She begins to slowly make her way down to the HALL.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(uneasily)
"There is a dark cloud coming in from the south."
MR. REGINALD ASH
(correcting her)
"There was some weather earlier, but it was off the coast. That's east, dear."
5.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"An omen of bad news, death, chaos, plague, pestilence, and fire will soon be upon our doorstep. The Moulay's vengeance sees no borders or gates."
MR. REGINALD ASH
(rolling his eyes)
"Ah, you're being cryptic again."
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"It will only bring the end closer."
MME ROSE looks at the paintings, tapestries, and drapery hanging around the HALL with sadness. She looks down at the floor in front of the LIBRARY door and sighs deeply.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Well, when you figure that out, let one of us know. In the meantime, I need to make sure the grounds are secure. Rusty had to play the part of chauffeur today."
MME ROSE huffs in annoyance at MR. ASH's demeanor.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"You have been warned twice today, Reginald Ash. A third warning will come hours before it happens. Heed it for God's sake!"
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Maybe you can help me, do you know where Dr. Black would have kept his diaries -- journals? Where did he keep the things he would want destroyed in the event of his untimely death?"
MADAME ROSE BLACK
(shrugging)
"You're his butler, you would know better than anyone."
MR. REGINALD ASH
(narrowing his eyes)
"Ah, so this whole psychic thing works like a light switch? Turn it on when you want to be creepy and ruin a party -- turn it off when I need help finding something."
6.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"The gift cannot be controlled."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Then it sounds like more of a burden and less than a gift."
MME ROSE closes her eyes and holds her hand forward towards the floor.
MADAME ROSE BLACK
"I hold my friends close to my heart, against my bosom -- as they turn to dust through my finger tips. I am not long for this world. I see my death more clearly in every dream as the day draws nearer."
MR. REGINALD ASH
"I think it is time to retire the opium pipe. If you have come home with the intention of dying, can you at least die quietly? Hugh may have supported your beliefs and occult practices, but I have no patience for it. My threshold for nonsense has been crossed a hundred times over."
MR. ASH walks towards the FRONT DOORS of BLACKWELL GRANGE and exits the mansion.
EXT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - FRONT DOOR - conTINUOUS
MR. ASH mumbles to himself as he crosses from the FRONT DOOR, past the COURTYARD to the crowd that has gathered on the other side of the FRONT GATES.
EXT. BLACKWELL GRANGE - FRONT GATES - CONTINUOUS
MR. ASH is immediately met with the blinding flashbulb of a reporter's camera. Several reporters are in the crowd holding up pens and notebooks. Among them, MR. ASH recognizes MS. KIMBERLY MANGO.
7.
MR. REGINALD ASH
"Go home! The family is mourning. They do not need a procession at the gates when they arrive."
MAN 1
"Who shot Hugh?"
MAN 2
"Was it the same gun that killed the secret maniac?"
REPORTER 1
"How long have you been working for the Black family?"
MS. KIMBERLY MANGO
"Where you aware of the cover-up in the murders of Alice Blue and Beatrice Black?"
MR. REGINALD ASH
(growing angrier)
"Everyone needs to go home! Now!"
REPORTER 2
"Is it true that your wife was abducted and you stood by and did nothing?"
MR. ASH lashes forward and grabs the FRONT GATES, shaking them like a mad man.
MR. REGINALD ASH
(shouting)
"Go home! Go home now! Right now!"
The townsfolk and reporters slowly back away and begin to walk down the gravel driveway. MS. MANGO stands behind, staring at MR. ASH, shaking her head in disgust. She spits in the GRAVEL DITCH as she turns to follow the rest of the procession.
8.
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - VISITATION ROOM #2 - conTINUOUS
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET stands next to EDWARD CLAY's closed casket. She places her hand over the top of it and sobs heavily.
The casket is cold to the touch. The entire room is kept extremely cold. Being the only one in the room -- Miss Scarlet feels the coldness closing in around her.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I'm so sorry, Eddie. I don't know what to do. I hate being alone. I thought I had you for the rest of my life. I thought the days of suffering alone were over."
MISS SCARLET squeezes her eyes shut. A tear escapes from the corner of her left eye.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I just want to hear your voice once last time. I'm starting to forget what it sounds like and it's scaring me. It's only been a week, Eddie... what am I supposed to do now? Who am I supposed to be?"
MISS SCARLET's eyes move from the casket, to the stained glass windows. She notices a pattern along the edge of the stain glass -- small circles with lines crisscrossing. The pattern reminds her of a tennis racquet.
FLASHBACK
EXT. ARLINGTON HALL - TENNIS COURTS - mORNING
MISS SCARLET walks along the end of the driveway towards the TENNIS COURTS. MISS SCARLET cannot takes her eyes off of the handsome blond man with the strong jawline by her side.
9.
MR. CLAY runs his tanned, strong fingers along her soft, pale arm. His gorgeous eyes reflect the emerald-green tree leaves and clearness of the blue sky.
MISS SCARLET takes notice of the tightness of MR. CLAY's tennis shorts and the bulge at his crotch. She tries to politely avert her gaze, but she is uncontrollably aroused from the past two weeks of sexual tension. She is clearly smitten for her new tennis coach and he is just as aroused by her:
MR. CLAY's eyes track all over her body. From her large breasts, to her narrow waist. From her curvy hips, down her long slender legs, to her tiny little feet.
MisS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(tossing her hair)
"Edward, shouldn't we be practicing?"
MR. EdWARD CLAY
"Of course."
MR. CLAY drops his sporting bag and withdraws two racquets. He hands one to MISS SCARLET -- their eyes linger.
MISS SCARLET serves the ball, far too high.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(chuckling, embarrassed)
"Damn."
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"It probably landed in Corduroy's swimming pool. That bitter old congressman is gonna send the Senator after me if I don't get it back."
MISS SCARLET watches as MR. CLAY rushes over to the brick wall separating the two backyards.
MISS SCARLET cannot take her eyes of of his back-side as he begins to climb the brick wall and the small hedge on top.
MISS SCARLET observes MR. CLAY's athletic, jungle-cat energy as he hops from one side -- takes all of fifteen seconds -- and reappears with the ball from the top of the fence.
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"Got it!"
10.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(clapping)
"Bravo!"
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"Ready?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Maybe I should stick to backyard badminton."
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"And after all the unscheduled, free lessons I've given you? I'm terribly insulted, miss."
MISS SCARLET chuckles, striding closer to him.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"I can pay."
(smirking)
"Just not in the same way my stepmother and the Senator pay you."
MR. CLAY pauses before approaching MISS SCARLET.
Only the tennis net separates their faces.
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"It's such a nice day out. I'd hate to ruin it in a bedroom."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Who said anything about a bedroom?"
MR. EDWARD CLAY
"Shall we have a picnic?"
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
(laughing)
"A picnic? How juvenile."
MR. CLAY laughs with her, unsure what to say next.
MISS SCARLET begins to unbutton a couple buttons on her blouse. She does not stop at her cleavage, continuing to unbutton to the middle of her stomach.
MR. CLAY swallows hard, gulping audibly.
11.
MR. EDWARD CLAY
(visibly aroused)
"I, uh..."
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Do you want to skip lessons today and fuck me behind the tool shed?"
MISS SCARLET opens her blouse, showing him her breasts encased beneath a white, lacy bra.
MR. EDWARD CLAY
(lost on words)
"Yeah. That sounds... I mean I have a lesson later... but I... Yeah... Yes, please."
MISS SCARLET takes off the blouse and throws it at MR. CLAY. He catches it.
MISS VIVIENNE SCARLET
"Let's go."
MR. CLAY follows bra-clad MISS SCARLET from the TENNIS COURTS to the large TOOL SHED on the edge of the yard. They disappear behind it.
END OF FLASHBACK
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - LOBBY - MOMENTS LATER
MR. RUSTY NAYLOR swiftly catches up with and taps MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY on the shoulder.
MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY
"Oh! You startled me. Can I help with something?"
MR. RUSTY NAYLOR
"I'm sorry, I know this is a strange time to go about asking this..."
12.
MRS. SLATE-GREY cocks her head to the side, confused, but ready to listen.
MR. RUSTY NAYLOR
"Would it be possible for you to accommodate two memorial services? Two staff members at Blackwell Grange passed away last weekend and there hasn't been any talk of a service. It breaks my heart."
MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY
"Oh, of course. I would be happy to go over everything we have to offer. I'm so sorry for your losses. If you could stop by on Tuesday morning?"
MR. RUSTY NAYLOR
(nodding appreciatively)
"Oh, yes. Thank you. It has been so hard to process everything."
MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY
"My husband and I were never very close with Dr. Black, but my husband did work as his accountant for years. It is such a sad circumstance."
MR. RUSTY NAYLOR
(shaking his head)
"I can't make sense out of any of it."
MRS. CHRISTA SLATE-GREY
"We all find peace. No grief ever lasts."
MR. RUSTY NAYLOR
(morbidly)
"Certain grief does."
INT. MEADOW-BROOK HALL - MALCOLM'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK sits on the edge of his bed. He is wrapping a bandage around his big toe. JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK stands in the doorway.
13.
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"That bitch needs to be stopped."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"What are you going to do?"
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"I'm going over to Jake's. His parents are at the funeral."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"Is mom going to the funeral?"
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
(nodding)
"She left half an hour ago."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
(quickly; desperately)
"Please, don't leave me alone with Mercy."
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"You aren't alone. Mrs. Ho is here."
JESSICA sighs as her brother stands up and grabs his backpack.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"Why do you need that?"
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"None of your business."
MALCOLM exits his bedroom.
INT. MEADOW-BROOK HALL - FOYER - conTINUOUS
JESSICA watches from the top of the stairs as MALCOLM puts on his shoes and quickly exits the house. MS. SAPPHIRE HO comes from the hallway that leads to the KITCHEN.
14.
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"Are you hungry, Miss Jessica?"
JESSICA nods her head. Her eyes are sad and heavy.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"What are you making?"
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"For dinner: roast duck, orange sauce and currant gravy, sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, peas, and those fried egg mashed potatoes that you and your father love so much."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"That's a lot of food."
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"Your parents are having company after the funeral. Mayor Periwinkle and his wife. I can make you whatever you'd like for lunch. We just stocked the pantry and cellar on Friday."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"Can I have a sandwich and tomato soup?"
MS. HO nods her head with as kind smile as she turns to the large pantry.
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
(calling out to Jessica)
"Creamy with thyme? Or roasted with basil?"
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"Thyme please."
MS. HO returns with a can of soup and jar of thyme. She gets some cream from the refrigerator and opens the bread box.
15.
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"And what type of sandwich would you like? I've already sliced roast beef and ham."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"Ham."
MS. HO opens the can of soup and begins to heat it up on the stove, adding the cream and the herb.
JESSICA looks out the back window and sees MRS. HENRIETTA CANARY snooping around the garden.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"What is she doing out there?"
Ms. SAPPHIRE HO
(slicing the bread)
"Does she have her mutts with her?"
JESSICA looks out the window again. There are no dogs.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"No."
MS. HO wipes off her hands with a towel and opens the back door.
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
(strict; stern)
"Mrs. Canary, you need to get off of our property!"
MRS. HENRIETTA CANARY
"I'm just making sure Princess Baize didn't leave any surprises. She got off her leash when I was in the community garden. She's a little rascal. Her brother is far better behaved!"
16.
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"I will take care of the yard, Mrs. Canary. Please leave the premise."
MRS. HENRIETTA CANARY
(offended)
"I was just being polite."
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
(bowing rudely)
"Thank you so much. Now, please leave."
MRS. CANARY huffs with clenched fists as she rushes to the picket-fence gate and exits the backyard.
MS. HO closes the back door, locking it.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"I don't know why my mother is friends with that crazy old woman."
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"She's a pain in the ass."
JESSICA chuckles.
MS. HO stirs the bubbling soup as she continues to make the ham sandwich.
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"How is your brother? Your mother tells me he's been hard to handle."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"He got a tattoo so she nearly broke his toe."
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
(quietly)
"And your sister?"
JESSICA shakes her head and doesn't speak.
MS. HO finishes the sandwich and puts it on a plate, placing it in front of JESSICA.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"I don't want to talk about her."
JESSICA picks at the lettuce hanging off of the sandwich.
17.
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"I understand. You don't need to upset yourself."
JESSICA nibbles at the sandwich in silence for a few moments.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"Why are you loyal to us? After all the abuse you've seen from my mom?"
MS. HO sighs deeply.
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"I think you're old enough to hear the story."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
(chewing slowly)
"What story?"
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"Your parents saved me when anyone else would have given my name to the police. I was a fugitive from another country. Your parents gave me a job and I was able to stay out of sight. I owe them everything."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"Why were you on the run?"
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"The man I was supposed to marry was in love with someone else. He was a powerful man. He started a small war over his love for that other woman. So many people died because of it... people still are dying because of it... And through it all, he still wanted to marry me to protect his image. I was essentially going to be his prisoner. A wife for the public, but kept out of sight in his real life."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"But now you cook and clean. You're always tucked away in our kitchen. How is that any better?"
MS. HO pours the soup into a bowl and places it in front of JESSICA.
18.
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"I may be a servant, but I still have my dignity. All the jewels, crowns, and gold in the world could have been mine, but I wasn't going to be someone's second choice -- a puppet to keep the charade going. I'm more than that and one day people will see that."
JESSICA dips her sandwich into the soup and begins to eat.
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"How do you feel about my sister?"
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
(hesitantly)
"I don't approve of any of it. But it is not my choice to make."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"What would you do if you were in my mom's place?"
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"I care more about family and love than I do about protecting my image. That's why I didn't settle for the life I had. Your mother is only concerned with how other people perceive her."
JESSICA MEADOW-BROOK
"She's going to chase Malcolm away from us."
MS. SAPPHIRE HO
"One day everyone will realize the error of their ways. It either drives you to madness or recovery."
(pausing)
"I personally don't see your mother taking the route to recovery."
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - SMALL CHAPEL - conTINUOUS
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK sits on the pews at the front with MISS AMELIA PEACH. They are the only two in the SMALL CHAPEL. They hold each other's hands tightly. Their faces are lit up with radiant happiness, dripping with tears of joy.
19.
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I can't believe I found you this quickly."
MISS AMELIA PEACH
"As soon as they told me who I was, I told my family that I needed to meet you. I have always felt so incomplete. But now... everything feels fresh and new."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"I am so sorry you were taken from me. You have to believe me... they told me you were dead. I've mourned you for years."
MISS AMELIA PEACH
"I don't blame you at all, mamma! My family in Mississippi told me all about Dr. Black and the things he was capable of. As dark as it is to say, I'm happy I never got to hear his voice."
MRS. PATRICIA PEACOCK
"He was a good man once... or at least he was good at pretending to be. I'm not sure about much anymore."
MISS AMELIA PEACH
"All that matters is we are finally together."
The two women embrace tightly.
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - LOUNGE - CONTINUOUS
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE is sitting near the window, looking outside at the foliage. LADY FLORENCE GRAY enters the room with a twisted, bitter expression.
20.
LADY flORENCE GRAY
"You told him, didn't you?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"What choice did I have?"
LADY FLORENCE GRAY
"If you were feeling so terrible about your decision to abandon motherhood you should have reached out to the kid that was never adopted, not the one who already has a family."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Benjamin wants to meet his brother, so I wrote to Sister Amethyst. It's over and done with."
LADY FLORENCE GRAY
(biting her lip)
"You told him about his brother too?"
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Yes."
LADY FLORENCE GRAY
"Are you trying to destroy what is left of my husband's reputation."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Quite frankly, I don't give a damn about Alfred or what anyone thinks about him. He's a miser and a tyrant."
LADY FLORENCE GRAY
"Blanche, I'm your baby sister, for God's sake! Why are you hell-bent on ruining my life."
21.
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Because I've reached the age where I just don't care anymore. I've had to live with my mistakes, bury them away with gin, pills, and lies. I take on the burdens of other people's problems so I don't have to think about my own. I am done; I am tired. I want my sons to meet. That is all."
LADY FLORENCE GRAY
"Why are you so suddenly concerned about the consequences of your actions? We all know you murdered Winslow and got away with it."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Is that what people think happened?"
LADY FLORENCE GRAY
"That's what people have always thought. No one sees you as an innocent old woman except yourself, Blanche. Everyone else has formed an opinion about you. It is the reason your only friend is a butler that you see and work with every single day."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
"Florence, I don't care. You are the same as you've always been. You try to hurt, attack, or get under people's skin when you are upset and didn't get your way. You are a child. It doesn't work on me anymore."
LADY FLORENCE GRAY
(firmly)
"I have no sister! You're dead to me."
MRS. BLANCHE WHITE
(rolling her eyes)
"If that means I don't have to sit through another insufferable conversation with you, then good. But then again, you've thrown this tantrum and disowned me fourteen times in the past already."
22.
INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - LOBBY - conTINUOUS
MR. GRAHAM SLATE-GREY straightens his tie as he approaches a small circle of mourners.
The small group of people consists of: LORD GRAY, DR. ORCHID, DR. RAVEN, MRS. MEADOW-BROOK, and REV. GREEN.
‌MR. GRAHAM SLATE-GREY
(in a hushed voice)
"I missed the long-lost daughter's grand entrance."
LORD ALFRED GRAY
(snorting)
"Long-lost daughter my ass!"
‌MR. GRAHAM SLATE-GREY
"You think she's a con?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"Not a doubt in my mind!"
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
"Come now, Graham! How long has Christa been in the funeral business? Surely you've seen long-lost-twice-removed-great-step nieces show up out of the wood work with their greedy hands open."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"It's the oldest trick in the book."
23.
MR. GRAHAM SLATE-GREY
"I suppose it makes sense. Then again, with Hugh's track-record of abandoning children over the years..."
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"He does have a point."
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
"I think secrets like that should stay hidden. Those children have lives elsewhere. They've no real claim on anything built up by the present family members."
LORD ALFRED GRAY
"It sounds to me like you are partial to John Boddy and Benedict Black keeping the Grange."
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
"Yes, I am. I don't like change. It messes things up."
LORD ALFRED GRAY
"Some secrets always find a way of escaping."
REVEREND HOSEA GREEN
"It is a part of life. Be sure your sins will find you out."
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"But we're all in agreement, are we not?"
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
"About Blackwell Grange?"
DR. ANDREA ORCHID
"No. I'm talking about Miss Peach conning Mrs. Peacock and the Black family."
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
"Oh, yes!"
DR. WALTER RAVEN
"Most definitely."
MRS. JANE MEADOW-BROOK
"One hundred percent!"
24.
INT. PRATTON POLICE DEPARTMENT - HOLDING CELLS - later
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO slams the metal door as he enters the narrow walkway between the CELLS.
DET. AMARILLO stops in front of MRS. OLIVIA GREEN.
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"Are you ready to confess?"
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
(tired; frustrated)
"I have nothing to confess to. I've told you time and time again that I've been framed."
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"The evidence is stacked against you. Nurse Silver told us you helped her."
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"She was lying."
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"Why would she lie about your involvement and not her own. She knew she was going to die. There is no reason to lie."
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"She was protecting someone else."
25.
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"No court is going to believe that, Mrs. Green. You need to tell us the truth."
OLIVIA turns her face away from DET. AMARILLO
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"I didn't do it."
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"Alright. I won't bother you anymore. Your trial date has been set. It's out of my hands."
OLIVIA opens her mouth to speak but DET. AMARILLO moves to HERR KLAUS GOLD's cell.
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"Herr Gold, I have some news for you."
HERR GOLD sits up fully, hands trembling with anxiousness.
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"As an international fugitive, we have no authority over your punishment and future confinement. You will be sailing back to Africa and the Moroccan police will handle your case."
HERR GOLD shakes his head in disbelief.
HERR KLAUS GOLD
"You can't send me back there!"
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"I have no authority in the matter. Your ship leaves tomorrow morning."
26.
HERR KLAUS GOLD
(through his teeth)
"It would be less of a hassle if you just hanged me now."
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"Whatever you did, they were determined to have you brought back alive. May God have mercy on you."
HERR GOLD's mouth turns dry and his heartbeat increases.
DET. AMARILLO moves over to PROF. PLUM's cell.
PROfESSOR VICTOR PLUM
(depressingly)
"And what of my fate?"
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"Someone inquired about your large bail."
PROF. PLUM sits forward excitedly.
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
"Who? What happened?"
DETECTIVE LOUIS AMARILLO
"I'm not at liberty to say. But the person said they'd be back with the money."
DET. AMARILLO tips his hat and exits out the way he came.
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"Wait! When is my trial?"
DET. AMARILLO does not hear her and does not come back.
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
"If they come and get me tomorrow morning before you are taken to the ship..."
27.
HERR KLAUS GOLD
(cutting him off)
"Don't! I don't need false hope."
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
"I'll find out your trial, Olivia."
HERR KLAUS GOLD
"I suppose this is my farewell. I thought Michael would at least visit me to sneer from the other side."
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
"You don't know..."
HERR KLAUS GOLD
"Professor, I know where I came from. I know Prince Azure's country and his laws. It's barbaric... medieval at best. I will spend so many days sweating in a dimly lit cell that I'll lose all track of time. I'll start to hear voices and I'll start to lose my mind. Right before I'm completely gone, they will torture me. Maybe they'll crush my bones or skin my limbs. They might make me drink boiling oil. All I know, is this is my last day of American freedom, even behind these bars."
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"What did you do? Why do they want you dead?"
HERR KLAUS GOLD
"Because I'm a traitor. I didn't comply to every demand like a puppet. My moral compass wasn't broken at that point. I still had good intentions."
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
"How exactly did you come across Colonel Mustard?"
HERR KLAUS GOLD
"I tried to leave Azure's militia. I tried to cross the line but couldn’t get past Azure's first line of defenses. There were too many landmines.

HERR KLAUS GOLD (CONT'D)
I saw a man running away from the gunfire with his family. They ran straight through the landmines. I watched that man lose a leg and fall face first into another. The chain-reaction of the other mines threw chunks of his family everywhere. I took their sacrifice as a sign to keep going. I ran through the clearing they created and kept running. The smell of their burnt flesh stayed in my nostrils. Desert turned to savannah, savannah into brush - I kept running until I walked straight into the Hampshire Regiment's campsite. Michael Mustard and Rusty Naylor quickly subdued me. An enlisted man was there. He saw my face and the fear. I don't know why, but he was shot - I never caught his name. After the body was burned, I was taken prisoner in secrecy. Mustard was the only one who came to feed me and question me. The distant gunfire got closer and closer every day until it was right above my head. Mustard cut my ropes and told me to leave and never show my face again."
PROFESSOR VICTOR PLUM
"And what became of you after that?"
HERR KLAUS GOLD
(shaking his head)
"So many bad things. Innocent lives lost..."
HERR GOLD becomes quiet.
MRS. OLIVIA GREEN
"I shouldn't be in here with you two. I'm not like you. I haven't done anything wrong..."
HERR KLAUS GOLD
"Neither did the family that was blown apart on the landmines. Sometimes the innocent become the sacrifice for someone else's gain."

INT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - MEN's BATHROOM - CONTINUOUS
SGT. GRAY splashes water on his face. COL. MUSTARD enters and stands behind him at the sink.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I understand that you are pissed off at everyone, but you need to cut your mother a goddamn break."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"Blanche or Florence?"
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
(angrily)
"Don't start that shit with me! You know damn well I am talking about Blanche."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"Look, I don't know what to feel. But I'm sure as hell not going to feel and act a certain way because someone else told me to. I need to figure this out on my own."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"It's been a week, Benjamin."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"So? A week isn't a very long time. Just because that's all the time you took to look for Samuel and Margaret doesn't mean that everyone else can pack everything up in a week."
COL. MUSTARD narrows his eyes.
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"Watch yourself, boy! I'm done taking that shit from John Boddy, I'm not about to start taking it from you."
30.
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"Then climb off my ass and worry about yourself. Look at you! You are so drunk, I don't think you'll even remember this conversation."
COLONEL MICHAEL MUSTARD
"I remember things just fine."
SERGEANT BENJAMIN GRAY
"I'm not having this conversation. Leave me alone."
SGT. GRAY exits the BATHROOM, slamming the door extra loudly.
EXT. ST. ANTHONY'S MORTUARY - GARDEN - EVENING
MASTER BODDY walks alone with his hands in his pockets. He inhales deeply, taking in the aroma of the flowers and the cool evening breeze. MISS ADELAIDE GRAY steps out of the MORTUARY and joins him on his stroll.
MISS ADELAIDE GRAY
"I don't think we've met. I'm Adelaide Gray. Lord and Lady Gray's daughter."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"John Boddy."
MISS ADELAIDE GRAY
"That's a gorgeous suit."
MASTER BODDY looks down at the black suit he's wearing and smiles a bit.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I just had it tailored."
MISS ADELAIDE GRAY
"I don't usually dress this plain and demur. Especially in this heat."
31.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"It's cooler in the shadows."
The two walk towards the bench shadowed by the MORTUARY.
MISS ADELAIDE GRAY
"I can't wait to see Blackwell Grange. I have an obsession with old mansions. I mean -- I grew up in one. But they are always so unique and special. The layouts, the style, the temperatures..."
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"I've always been a fan of large houses, too. I suppose it is the familiarity of growing up in one."
MISS ADELAIDE GRAY
"You don't suppose I could come over after the funeral? I heard some people are having drinks to honor your Uncle Hugh. We could honor him by admiring his beautiful home."
MASTER BODDY looks up at the sky and inhales deeply.
MASTER JOHN BODDY
"Sure, why not?"
MISS ADELAIDE GRAY
(smiling excitedly)
"Yay! I think you and I are going to be great friends!"
MASTER BODDY smiles back at her.
INT. SLATE-GREY HOME - JAKE's bedroom - LATER
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK sits on the edge of JAKE SLATE-GREY's bed. His sleeve is rolled up and his tattoo is visible.
32.
JAKE is looking at the tattoo closely while MALCOLM talks.
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
(venting)
"... but she always finds something to be upset about. Even when absolutely nothing wrong has happened. It's half the reason I stopped caring and trying. She'll find something to whine and complain about."
JAKE SLATE-GREY
"Just move out. You know my family loves you. They'll gladly take care of you."
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"I know that, Jake. And just knowing I have somewhere I can run away to gives me the confidence and patience to endure what I do..."
(pausing)
"But my sisters..."
JAKE begins to trace the tattoo with his fingers.
JAKE SLATE-GREY
"You could turn your parents in to the police."
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"The look on my mother's face as they drag her away... I'd give anything for that. But Jessie and our cook don't deserve that type of treatment."
JAKE SLATE-GREY
"They don't deserve the treatment they are getting now."
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"My father isn't the issue. It's my mother."
JAKE SLATE-GREY
"Then convince your father to do something about it. Have a talk with him, man to man."
MALCOLM looks down at the carpet.
33.
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"I might go golfing with him. I'll see if I can talk to him about it then."
JAKE SLATE-GREY
"Anything else you want to talk to him about?"
MALCOLM looks up at JAKE.
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
"I'll tell him eventually."
MALCOLM leans closer and gently kisses JAKE on the lips.
JAKE SLATE-GREY
"Everything is going to be okay."
MALCOLM MEADOW-BROOK
(sighing)
"Yeah. I know."
EXT. Across the lake - derelict cabin - night
MISS BRENDA DOVE sits in the darkness of the porch's shadows. The crickets are buzzing and the frogs are croaking. Several fireflies flicker near the LAKE's edge. The SHOTGUN is at her side.
MISS DOVE can see the lights of BLACKWELL GRANGE turning on as people return from the funeral.
She hears the snap of a twig from the around the corner of the CABIN.
MISS DOVE reaches for the SHOTGUN and tightens her grip on it.
She listens as quiet footsteps approach. She holds the SHOTGUN ready as:
34.
MONSIEUR BRUNETTE dressed in his CAPTAIN CHERRYWOOD disguise comes around the corner.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"What the hell are you supposed to be?"
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"I'm in disguise."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"What are you doing here?"
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"I could ask you the same thing. Aren't you supposed to be dead?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"You don't seem to confused about the matter? What are people saying out there about me?"
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Well, most of us assume Olivia wasn't really involved... but from what I've seen no one really seems to care that the bitch is rotting away in a cell."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
(smirking)
"She deserves every second of it. Pius cunt."
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Hugh's funeral was today."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Did you show up?"
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"I had other things going on. I've been very busy."
35.
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"How is Fivel?"
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"He's with Nurse Silver's mother. That's all I know."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Can you check in on him?"
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"And tell him what exactly?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"I don't want you to tell him anything. I just want to know if he's okay. I need you to gain his trust."
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Why would I do that for you?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"Because if you don't, I'll have to kill you. No one is supposed to know I'm alive out here."
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"Fine. Whatever. I'll talk to the kid. Do you even have a plan, Brenda? Or are you just camping in the woods until you figure something out?"
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"I know what I'm doing."
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"I'd like a little insight if I'm going to be risking my ass for you."
MIss BRENDA DOVE
"My mother is back in Pratton."
MONSIEUR ALPHONSE BRUNETTE
"That means nothing to me."
MISS BRENDA DOVE
"My mother is Margaret Black-Boddy. And we are about to change this town once and for all."
